    First of all, thanks for the help with getting rid of some of the junk on my PC.
    I ran the READ & RUN ME FIRST just like you said, and I still have some problems.

    The first thing that still happens is I still have the "Warning! Spyware detected on your computer..." background, and I still get the "blue screen of death" (the one that says Windows has detected a problem...) quite frequently.

    Second, I still have the Antivirus XP 2008 malware that starts up every time I reboot the system.

    Thirdly, my system time never reset back to normal after I ran the combofix.

    I have attached the first 3 files as instructed, and will follow up with a second post for the MGlogs.

    Thanks in advance!

    Some additional info on the desktop background...
    I right clicked and clicked Properties, but I don't have a Desktop Tab anymore.
    Any ideas?

    Please use add/remove programs to uninstall:
    AntivirXP08

    Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following:

    Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it(Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

    Now Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixME.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
    Now we need to use ComboFix to remove a bunch of malware files.

    * Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
    o If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    * Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below code box into it (make sure you scroll all the way down in the code box to get all lines selected ):
    Code:
    KILLALL::

    Driver::
    beep.sys

    File::

    * Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    * At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    * You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    * Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    * Follow the prompts.
    * When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    * I will ask for this log below

    Note:

    Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

    Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this and also attach the log from ComboFix.

    Be sure to tell us how things are running.

    TimW,

    Thanks a bunch! The Antivirus XP 2008 is gone! The "Warning" background is gone! I now have the Desktop tab and the Screensaver tab back in the display properties.

    The only problems I have now are that my system time is still in 24-hour format, and I don't know how to change it back to 12-hour, and my machine is really slow. It takes forever just to open Explorer or Control Panel.
    Any ideas?

    Again, thanks for the help. The files you requested are attached.

    First I want you to go to:
    C:\Qoobox - and restore
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\beep.sys
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\dllcache\beep.sys

    AntivirXP08 is still showing in your add/remove program list, so go here and double click the uninstall.exe:
    C:\\Program Files\\rhc3b0j0evd3\\uninstall.exe

    Now we need to use ComboFix to remove a bunch of malware files.

    * Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
    o If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.

    C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Application Data\ihalajuca.com
    C:\WINDOWS\banug.com

    Thanks for noticing the AntivirXP08, I took care of that. It said it was already uninstalled, but it was still on the list.

    The clock is still set for 24-hour format. Is there a way to change it?

    The PC seems to be running better, but it may just be me.

    The last thing that is different from before is that when I do a google search using the search icon on the top toolbar, I can't open any links from the left side of the screen. If you don't understand what I'm talking about (because I didn't decsribe it very well), let mew know. I tried to take a screenshot of it, but I can't get that to work either.

    Thanks!

    Let's try again....

    Download The Avenger by Swandog469, and save it to your Desktop.

    Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following:

    * Extract avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop
    * Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    * Do not change any check box options!!
    * Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it into the Input script here: part of the window:

    * Now click the Execute button.
    * Click Yes to the prompt to confirm you want to execute.
    * Click Yes to the Reboot now? question that will appear when Avenger finishes running.
    * Your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    * A log file from Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt and it will popup for you to view when you login after reboot.

    Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this and also attach the log from Avenger.

    We will reset your clock when we are finished. :)

    Tim,
    Sorry it took me so long to get back to you, I've been working lots.

    Anyhow, I performed the steps as instructed and attached the logs.

    Everything seems to be running fine, my wife has not complained in a while...

    Looks good.....and if the wife is not complaining, what else could a guy want?? :-D

    You might want to download ATF Cleaner by Atribune. This program does not require an installation. The executable actually runs the program.

    If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:

    1 If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop & renamed it like we requested.)

    * Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required (substitute for cf whatever you renamed it)
    * "%userprofile%\Desktop\cf" /u
    o Notes: The space between the cf" and the /u, it must be there.
    o This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    * Delete the C:\cf folder from combofix.
    2 *If we used SmitFraudFix, you can delete all files and folders related to it now including the c:\rapport.txt log.
    3 *If we used VundoFix, you can delete the VundoFix.exe file and the C:\VundoFix Backups folder and C:\vundofix.txt log that was created.
    4. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    5. You can delete the C:\MGtools folder and the C:\MGtools.exe file. You can also delete the C:\MGlogs.zip
    6. If you are running Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
    * Refer to the cleaning steps in the READ ME for your Window version and see the steps to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
    * Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    7. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

    Great, thanks!

    A few more questions...

    1.) My system clock is still set to 24-hour time. I thought there used to be a check box or selection to make it 12 or 24, but I can't find it. Any ideas?

    2.) How do I uninstall McAfee AV? There is no uninstall exe.
    I was going to install of of the recommended AV programs.

    3.) Do you recommend installing SP3 for XP?

    Thanks for all your help!

  14. TimW

    TimW MajorGeeks Administrator - Jedi Malware Expert Staff Member

    You can use the McAfee Removal tool.

    You can reset the clock by going to the control panel / Regional and Language / Customize / Time .....and set it to the format you want.

    I see no reason not to install SP3 .....
