A laptop of mine I use to operate my CNC was crushed by a heavy foot child ( my fault for setting it down beside my chair to take a break ). I mannaged to retrieve all my CNC programs using an external reader on the hard drive. What I need help with is trying to recover my emails stored in the inbox on this drive.

I looked at older posts to locate the files. What I did find wasn't exactly where the older posts said to find them. The file I think I need is located at K:\Documents and Settings\Customer\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook and in there is Outlook.pst registering 50mb in size

A twist to this - if I try to import into Outlook express and use the browse function I can locate this directory K:\Documents and Settings\"user"\Local Settings\Application Data\Identities\{DFF16927-88E6-4EAA-A097-460B7E65289B} it goes no further with Microsoft\Outlook Express as indicated on older posts. The odd part to this is searching the drive manually it doesn't show this directory at all even with hidden files shown. Only the one first directory I listed in the above paragraph. I know nothing about how a computer functions so this may make total sense to others.

If I do have the right file located then my question is how do I get this to work with the Outlook Express that is on this system? Someone told me I could import the file inbox.dbx if I found that but when I try to import this Outlook.pst file it gives an error message that I can not import from the MAPI client. If I select to import from Outlook 4 instead of just Outlook then it allows me to direct to the location of this Outlook.pst file but says the file is empty. It can't be if it is 50mb in size. What am I doing wrong?

Hi Wcc, welcome to majorgeeks :D

If you havn't already done so i would back all the data up onto another drive, then if you still can't locate the files manually try running an email recovery app' here is a link to a freeware one...

Thanks for trying to help me out here. I tried the suggestion and downloaded the free version linked abaove. What I am finding with it is it only searches within the current operating outlook express. I don't see any option to search for files on the external drives directory. There is a search box but it seems to only function within the current operating email program. This would be great in the future if I happen to delete an email I didn't want to remove. But from what I can see the program isn't able to retrieve emails from another drive. I could be missing something on how to operate this program.

Thanks! after posting the reply about my results with the free version I tried the second download link provided (stellar). The free trial worked perfectly. It allowed me to search my external drives directory. On the free trial I was able to find and read the email I needed, I just couldn't save the file to import without buying it. But that's fine. I have the info I needed from the email. You guys were a huge help, Thanks!!!!!
