I wish to retrive old emails from a badly infected hard drive to a new operating system on a new drive can it be done?

It can be done, the question would be if any of what you want to retrieve is infected. You would have to be very sure that the other computer is well protected with updated definitions. I would start by installing this on the clean machine:
    AutoEater.

Then, depending on whether you are slaving the drive or just copying the emails off the old drive to a cd, I would scan either before moving items.

Thanks for the reply TimW. The old drive is still in the computer but disconected. The original infection Im sure did nt come through email, but of course thats not to say it s not infected now. I was wondering if I could set the drive as slave and what folder files etc I would have to copy across. The new drive has comodo installed which has worked well for me in the past but stupidly I had nt got round to installing it on the other drive before it became infected. As its only some addresses I need and the old drive still lets me read them, like you say I suppose I could record them to cd or print them off. It would just be useful to know which files and how to copy them across for future referance. Thanks for your help

Do not back up any executable files. This includes programs that you have downloaded since any of them could be infected. Anything you may have already backed up that is an executable type file (things you downloaded to install programs....etc) are most likely infected and will cause you to be reinfected if you reuse these files.

The safest thing for you to do is backup your personal data. Once you backup, you need to format partitions and reinstall Windows and all other software especially your protection software. Then install all updates for all software. DO NOT reinstall from any executable file backups you made while this PC was infected or you will just be reinstalling the infection.

I suggest you post in the software forum for additional assistance.
