Revamping Old Games

so I was pondering this thought
"How hard would it be for me to revamp my Mechwarrior 4 games Textures into textures like that of todays?" or mod it even for that matter

well I was wondering if anyone here on MG has tried Modifying/Update an old out of date game thats fun but needs a face lift?

also could they give some pointers to us Nubs on how to go about retexturing, parallax mapping, normal mapping, and bump mapping said textures and applying them to these old wonders of the past

 

Wow! This is a very interesting (and very ambitious) goal!

I haven't made a serious effort at this myself, but I have poked around enough game files to imagine that this will be a fairly title-specific procedure. Standardization isn't really the friend of proprietary software.

That said, I would begin checking with the developer to see if they offer any sort of modding/editing kits.

In the case of Mechwarrior 4, Microsoft offers a Mission Editor that I would investigate first and foremost to see what sort of capabilities it would offer.
