I thought I'd throw this idea out there, probably get shot down:cool

The forum doesn't have a small dedicated place for us to review the things we buy which are a lot of things us being Geeks.

When you Google for a review of a product you usually end up with Amazon ect ect, what I've noticed is Majorgeeks forum is always ranked really highly in Google searches so a thread with the keyword 'review' in will most certainly be up there in top search results on Google.

So what better for someone to come here through Google without logging in and reading a decent review from a third party unrelated to the product and having a clickable sales ad for the product at the bottom/middle of thread similar to other review based websites.

Well there it is,feel free to take it apart:-D

Actually, I like this idea. I love researching things and quite frankly won't buy something unless I've seen reviews from real people (as apposed to the 'experts' or 'editors' who I swear get kickbacks).

We plan to add user reviews to the software one of these days. Maybe a reviews forum for software and hardware, I don't know?

It sounds like a great idea.

I would be more inclined to believe members here who i know and trust to give honest reviews rather than the biased Amazon and Cnet.

Would have to be a genuine personal review of hardware or software over a random link found on the internet.

The type thats a whats this hardware for (purpose), how it works with images for hardware, and pros and cons, with maybe a follow after a month of usage.

For software again the purpose, run through of main options and pros and cons, with again a follow up after a month or so's usage.

A review of an app should really enter into say 100 words plus with some screenshots etc, wouldnt want this type of forum area if added to decend into half hearted and unused section.

    I don't know either:-D That's what I thought just hardware and software.

Quick reference to specific product would be tough to implement its hard using vbulletin search to find things ,multiple reviews of the same product could be a problem but they could be grouped into one thread.

That would be the toughest problem, finding a review for a specific product but the users that find their way here from outside the forum may make up for that.

Could be forum that actually pays its own way:-D

Yeah I totally agree its has to be a decent review with a fixed minimum term of use, screenshots maybe,it has to be stopped from becoming a place to go and rant about products people have had bad experiences with because that's usually the only time people have the energy to write a review.

The best reviews would be ones that plan a review before the product has arrived not just after a extremely positive or negative experience,a good sticky could implement guidelines of course.

Just so I have my head around this, it would be a personal review done by a member here properly on hardware or software they have, over just a messy collection of found links to other reviews already done by 3rd party?

Yes that would have to be a given, questions on the review great but a tech question would need to go in the approprieate forum area or it would make the HW/SW forums a bit of a waste of time, and be a nightmare to moderate and move posts.

Indeed a good set of guidelines on how to post a review would also be needed, and I would likely want it like the BST forum was, all threads in moderation first before going live so they could be checked first. Plus users posting 10 guides a day are highly unlikely to have given it a good deal of thought other than to increase a postcount.

Definitely, there would need to be a 'Pros' and 'Cons' to make any review worthwhile reading.

As Dave said, Approval for all reviews would probably have to occur.

That's what I was thinking, reviews done by regular members here.I don't know if it will cut down on the mandatory "Is this any good" "Thinking of buying these" threads, third party reviews can/will still be dumped in there.

    Moderation is your problem:-D

Will all reviews have to be approved?I don't know the answer that either I guess it would depend,if people stick to the directions in the sticky and post a minimum number of words not just "This modem $$$$$ng blows don't buy" "Waited 3months for this video card from such and such a company and got use puppy instead, steer clear!":-D

I'll leave it to you guys to work out the logistics I've just bought some new headphones I planning a review for;)

Yeah thats what I at first thought and would it cut down on the likes of multiple threads on e.g. "is AVG any good" when say we already have a review on said software, sadly no-one really searches the forum but I see your point on if the thread title is "Review of <insert product here>" could.

Still cannot see the point of aggregating a 3rd party review/s from another site/s on a forum, if a user wants a review of a product they are likely to search themselves, but a MG created review is different as you say its personal.

The reason I mention 3rd party review is I could go online and search now with Bing and find 1000s of revews and post 1000s of threads but thats not where I would like to see this go.

more work for me makes me grumpy and things happen :major

I think this would be one of those times for a limited trial and say hardware reviews is a goodun to normally start with and we can judge the quality and usefulness of this and ok as you have new headphones then write the review and pop it in the Gadgets forum and we can have a look?

It is a good idea, as I know some of the software on the download pages have reviews. My only concern would be that anyone doing a review would have to do a thorough job. Not just an "I liked it".

Hmmm?If the sticky is basically a template for the format of how a review should be written then people could basically fill it in.

    So as quick example

How to write a review in this forum

All reviews must be of a purchased product and be tested for one week minimum.

Product name: Product name and model must be in the Title of the review, the word review must be added at the end of each product title. Depending on the product not all fields will be applicable, each section must be titled packaging, quality ect. ect.

    Packaging: 50 words

    Ergonomics: 100 words

    Quality : 100 words

    Manual : 100 words

Performance : 100 words, try to include numbers and repeatable tests for comparison

Value : 100 words min,try to include comparison products

    Conclusion : 100 words

These are guidelines for the minimum expected for a review,if unsure observe the format of previous reviews and aim to equal or better the quality.

    Something like that.

Obviously that would a template for a hardware review, a software review would be totally different and I'll leave that to the software experts around here.
