Think outside the square.....

Romeo and Juliet are found dead on the floor in a bedroom. When they were discovered, there were pieces of glass and some water on the floor. The only furniture in the room is a shelf and a bed. The house in is a remote location, away from everything except for the nearby railway track. What caused the death of Romeo and Juliet?

Wild Man Dave said, "This statement is false." Which can neither be true or false.

Are they goldfish? The goldfish bowl fell off the shelf, probably from a train wreck or something

Now, wouldn't this expression include a (x-x) multiplier? Meaning everything there is multiplied by 0?

Very good Mada ....now what was the answer to the question of how to make an equation using the number 2 ....equaling 25?

11. TheDoug

TheDoug MajorGeek

I'll take a stab, and, applying the observation that many "riddles" are more like trick questions where the reader infers restrictions that are not specifically stated, guess:

23 + 2 = 25

12. TimW

TimW MajorGeeks Administrator - Jedi Malware Expert Staff Member

Like you really thought it was that easy???

You didn't look at the original question...LOL

Using only the number 2 ...twice, with any math symbol, function, etc....have an equation that equals 25.

13. TheDoug

TheDoug MajorGeek

I did read the original question, and even considered:

3² + 4² = 25

can we turn one 2 upside down and make it a 5 and then square it using the other 2 ? Or is that being silly ?

16. TimW

TimW MajorGeeks Administrator - Jedi Malware Expert Staff Member

Matt .....If I was to give you a hint ...it would be what you just said ...(but not to actually turn it upside down. ....just that it will eventually involve the use of a 5 )!

We're doing riddles, Laurie ;)

Take your pick from.....

While exploring the wilds of Canada, Wild Man Dave was captured by hostile wood fairies. Brad, the powerful chief of the fairies told him he could make one final statement which would determine how he would die. If the statement he made was false, he would be boiled in water. If the statement were true, he would be fried in oil. Wild Man Dave found neither of this options too his liking, so he made a statement that got him out of this seemingly impossible situation. What is the one statement he could have made?

or

(a-x)(b-x)(c-x).........(y-x)(z-x)= ?

I guess that is the answer you were looking for, Lev. However, I still hold that my answer would work as well. They both create a paradox that would lead to the realease of Wild Dave.

It MAY work :) However, the correct answer will DEFINITELY work ;)

????? i must be feeling very thick today. perhaps its the VOG

37. Lev

Lev MajorGeek

here's the explanation Laurie :)

Wild Man Dave said: "You will boil me in water." The fairies were faced with a dilemma. If they boil him in water, that would make his statement true, which means he should have been fried in oil. They can only fry him in oil if he makes a true statement, but if they do, it would make his final statement false. The fairies had no way our of their situation so they were forced to set Wild Man Dave free.

try this one

A grandfather clock chimes the appropriate number of times to indicate the hour, as well as chiming once at each quarter hour. If you were in another room and heard the clock chime just once, what would be the longest period of time you would have to wait in order to be certain of the correct time?

A horse is tied to a five meter rope in front of an old saloon. Six meters behind the horse is a bale of hay. Without breaking his rope, the horse is able to eat the hay whenever he chooses. How is this possible?

Well the Lateral Thinking answer is "As long as it takes to look at your watch, or other known correct time-piece". ;)

Or else, you could hear the first chime at 12:15, then you would have to wait until 2 (no, not :100, that’s also 1 chime) until you can get the accurate time by chime sound alone.

So therefore, you would have to wait 1 hr 45 minutes at longest from the first chime to have the two o’clock time. (Not allowing for seconds to think, move etc.)

Of course. Given the limited question, there is no one correct answer. (least way, dat’s what I think. ;) )

47. brksta

brksta Corporal

nope sorry mate thats wrong but if you look to the very top of this page you will find the correct answer which Lev has given
although i hate to admit that she is right, once again:rolleyes: :)

48. Maxwell

Maxwell Folgers

I know that Lev has given an answer of 90 minutes but this is without any explanation.

I think the answer depends on how you interpret the "single chimes". One possible answer seems to be 45 minutes since if the time were 12.15 you would hear another single chime at 12.30, 12.45. 1.00, 1.15, 1.30
and 1.45, and then a double chime at 2.00, one hour 45 minutes after the first singleton: but when you heard the fourth single chime at 1.00 you would know that this would be 1.00 since there cannot be a sequence more than 3 single chimes without 1.00 intervening. Hence in this case the answer is 45 minutes.

The catch is, if you only heard the last single chime of 12.00 then you would have to wait until 2.00 to be sure since you don't know where in the sequence the single chimes had started. Hence in this case the answer is 2 hours.

The answer it seems depends on whether you count a part of a chime as a single chime or not.
