A warden of a prison is bored one day so he decides to play a game with the prisoners. He gathers all 100 prisoners in the cafeteria and explains the game. "You will all be lined up facing forward and a white or black hat will be placed on your head. Starting from the back of the line you must guess what color hat you have on. You can not touch the hate. You can look at all the prisoners in front of you, but not behind you. You can not touch any other prisoner. You can only say 1 word. If you do not guess the color of your hat correctly or break any other rules you will be shot in the head. You have 1 hour to think of a strategy to maximize how many will survive." With the best strategy how many prisoners are guaranteed to survive? What is the strategy?

First off no, second off that doesn't even really help since you still can't see your own hat and can't say more than 1 word without getting shot

The strategy is to simply tell the man in front what colour his hat is. That way, 99 are guaranteed to survive, assuming there is nobody in the line with the I.Q. of a glass of water and he forgets the strategy. The first man has a 50:50 chance of surviving.

Well 99 is correct with how many you can guarantee survive but I think your strategy is wrong. Because you can only say 1 word, so if the guy behind you says white (which means yours is white) then if you say white you live but if the guy in front of you has a black hat then he dies if he says white too.

 

In that case, can they agree on four words that are coded to mean 'I have a white hat, yours is black/white', but that word starts with the word black (to denote their own hat colour, followed by a word that can be preceded by the word black or white.)
That is, maybe the first guy guesses his hat is black and the agreed code word for 'my hat is black, yours is black' is blackboard (black is the colour of his hat and board is the code for your hat is black.) Therefore, he has described the colour of his hat and passed on the colour of the man's hat in front of him while using only one word. For example, my hat is white, yours is white could be whitewash. Black/white could be blackwater and white/black whitebait.

No... I guess a better way to phrase the rules would be to say you can only say the word 'white' or the word 'black'

I would use the tone of the word to indicate to the next person what color of hat he wore.

You are wearing a black hat: I will say the color of my hat in a low tone.
You are wearing a white hat: I will say the color of my hat in a high tone.

This way, all prisoners except the first one will survive. The first prisoner has a 50/50 chance.

Well it's not the answer I was told so there might have been something about tone in the rules that I forgot

They all form a circle facing each other and the first prisoner tells the second the colour of his hat and the third and so on till he has told all the others, then there one word will be the colour of their hat and the first man who walked round telling all the others gives his life to save the other 99 ! Am i right ?

Or my other solution to this is they are in a cafeteria so they all go for a cup of coffee and half of them get a black coffee and the other half white coffee and sit opposite each other one with white coffee one with black coffee they point to the coffee to indicate whether the other prisoners hat is black or white and after pointing then that man can say the colour of his hat and that is the only one word he says and he is not looking at the man behind him he is looking at the man sat opposite him and after the first two men have spoken the next two do the same thing and so on until they all have done it and they all survive ! Am i right ?

No, I said there is no lame tricks, the answer involves only saying the word white or black, it's simple but clever

I think I have an answer, but it requires that, with the prisoners facing forward, the person in the front starting and they go to the rear.

Just as a matter of interest, i'd just like to point out that we would all be dead now as its took us lot a hell of a lot longer than an hour to work out ! :-D:-D:-D

 

The last person in line counts the number of white hats ahead of him. If there is an even number, he says black. If there is an odd number, he says white. There is a 50/50 chance he will be right.

The next person in line knows how many white hats the person behind him saw. If previous guy said white (odd), and he sees an even number of hats in front of him, he knows his hat is white. He can use this knowledge to deduce if he is black or white.

This will continue on for every person up the line.

It doesn't matter. If the person in the back sees 74 white hats, he guesses black. It doesn't matter if he dies.

The next person knows the person behind him saw an even number of white hats. If that person now sees an odd number (73) than he knows his hat is white. If he still sees an even number of white hats (74) than he knows his hat is black.

key: even = black; odd = white.
edit. There are cases you have to consider what the last 2 or 3 people said. If one person sees 73 white hats and guesses white, the next person knows he saw odd number of white hats. If he now sees 72 white hats, than he guesses white also, even though it is an even number of white hats. The next person in line has to take this into consideration.
