Im new so bare with me fellas. I am using windows vista. 32-BIT. When I right click on a desktop icon, this fatal error message comes up. Cannot start this program because the "Resources" directory or one of its sub-directory is missing. Please try re-installing this program. Then everything goes blank for about 10 seconds and reappears.
I am not too smart with computers so I have no idea what is talking about. My friend told me to place the vista disc in my computer and try repair but I don't see anything about repairing when the vista disc is running. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

    Hi

What Service Pack level is your Vista at?

Had you been using any Registry or PC cleaning applications before this happened? if so what one, or when this first started had you installed any new software/Windows updates or drivers?

Is this any icon on the desktop that this happens with or a specific one?

Have you run any malware scanners to check you do not have malware? Malwarebytes and Superantispyware are good, if they do find any malware let us know as we will have to take a different course of action and aim you to our mwlare forum and its Step By Step guide to to malware scans and how to attach logs to a new thread in our malware forum (see steps below, but if any malware is found do start a new thread in the mwlare forum and attach the logs as requested)

Have you tried to boot into Safe Mode (F8 at boot and choose Safe Mode with Networking) and see if the same happens? if it does not then please let us know as this may narrowe the issue down to a starting application.

If it is a starting application, then click Start > and type into the Start Search box msconfig and hit enter, once msconfig has opened click the startup tab and disable (untick everything) then reboot, does the same happen when you right click an icone on the desktop?
    • If it does then enter msconfig and re-enable all the startups and reboot.
    • If it does not happen then enter msconfig again and enable the top item and reboot and does it happen now, if not then re-enter msconfig again and enable the next item and reboot and so on, until the issue happens and then make a note of the offending application and disable it again, then enable the next item and reboot again, do this until all apart from the offending applicaion is enabled again (if you have another one that causes the same disable it and again post what it is), but do post what the application/s is so we can troubleshoot why its happening with you.

If you wish to repair VISTA then click Start and type CMD into the Start Search box, then right click CMD and choose Run as Administrator to open an elevated command prompt (CMD) then type sfc /scannow and hit enter (do have the Vista CD/DVD in the drive)

    Malware steps if found

Thanks Halo for this. I will answer some of the questions now and I'll have to go through some of the other steps and get back with you.
First, I tried to click on start then right click on computer for the properties but again right click error. I can only say windows vista home premium for now or is there another way to find out the service pack I am running?
Second, I ran C Cleaner but I have been using this for a few years without any noticable problems in the past.
Next, When my computer first went haywire, something crashed the mouse, usb ports, Hi def speakers on my monitor and ATI comtrollers drivers so I deleted them and rebooted my computer which recognized new hardware and reinstalled the drivers for me which all work fine now.
When I right click on all of the desktop icons the same problems occure, no specific ones.
I used Malwarebytes before all of this started, but been using this for a couple of years as well with no problems. I have not tried superantispyware before.Should I try it?
I hope this narrows some for you. I will try the other steps and get back with you. Again thank you so much this thing has me pulling my hair out! George
