RIP: Daredevil Evel Knievel dead at 69

Ironically I was reading an article about him at lunch time today. It is in the Dec '07 issue of Maxim magazine, titled "Evel Never Dies". Strange...

You gotta hand it to Evel...

He was the very definition of the phrase 'one-of-a-kind.' Here's a guy who took what was basically a little or no-pay part-time "carneys" job (dare-deviling) and turned it into a multimillion dollar industry.

Not to mention his ability to draw millions from the merchandizing well.

I remember reading somewhere that Ideal toys sold something like 300 million dollars worth of Evel Knievel related merchandise during the 70s and '80s, not to mention other companies that hawked everything evil related from lunchboxes to dolls, leather jackets, custom motorcycles and bicycles.

Evel was great,I was the proud owner of a an evel wind up stunt bike one of the greatest toys ever invented

 

While it's always sad to hear of someone passing and as a teenager I was fascinated with his jumps he was IMO not someone to idolize. Wife beater, soliciting a police officer posing as a prostitute, sued for unpaid back taxes, convicted for weapons violations, etc. etc.

No one is perfect but damn. Maybe his conversion to Christianity resulted in positive major changes in his life once he was out of the limelight...whose to say? All in all, I cannot wish ill of the dead. R.I.P. and thanks for the mind boggling stunts I saw on TV many, many years ago.

 

I saw him once as a very young child at my brother's school fair in the UK. His stunts affected me for life (I guess, as this is was my first exposure to motorcycles) as I became a biker. Thankfully I have never gone on to some of his other activities that AbbySue listed. Let's hope his conversion to christianity was very deep within him. R.I.P.

 

Wow!Didn't know he got up to all that stuff,I knew he was an alcoholic but yeah Damn.

 

Amazing he lived as long as he did. There is Robbie to take over, he's almost as crazy.

 

You can say that again...having seen documentaries on that guy in the past, he must have led a charmed life given he must have broken every bone in his body with all his different stunts. But he had quite a following who continue the tradition <shudder :eek>

 

tough old bird, sorry to see him go, he's probably making jumps in heaven.
