    hi, i have used majorGeeks advice from stickys many times before, but this time I am not able to rid myself of this infection. I have tried cleaning this (these) infections many times in the past month (on all accounts and in safemodes). First I got some version of WinAntivirus and would keep removing it, but it would keep returning (until I deleted individual files that looked out of place myself). Then I got an infection that would not let me log onto normal mode windows (until I used Combofix). My main firewall and antivirus and antispyware is CA Internet Security Suite. I have used Combofix a handful of times this past week, and after every time I use it Antispyware from CA detects WinAntivirus 2006 and WinSpywareProtect (and sometimes BiFrost). Right now I dont seem to have any big evidences of an infection unless I go to look for them, but I have a feeling my information on my comp is not secure and/or these infection(s) will cause problems later.

    -Thank You guys so much for putting up the site and for this individual help

    I strongly advise you to cleanup your Desktop. Remove everything but links to run programs. Do not download and save programs here and definitely do not use it for long term storage. You need to keep ComboFix.exe here for now as we need it, but we will be removing it when we are finished with your cleanup. A cluttered Desktop is malware's playground and it can also cause performance degradation especially when you start saving large files here like you are doing.

    Please be sure you have done this:
    Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following (re-enable when you are finished):

    Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

    * Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
    If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    * Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    * If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    * Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below code box into it (make sure you scroll all the way down in the code box to get all lines selected ):
    Code:
    KILLALL::

    Driver::

    * Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    * At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    * You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    If it asks you to overide the previous file with the same name, click YES.
    * Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif
    * Follow the prompts.
    * When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    * I will ask for this log below

    Note:

    Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

    Please run this: GMER - running with a random name and attach the log from GMER.

    Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:
    * GMER log.
    * C:\ComboFix.txt
    * C:\MGlogs.zip

    thanks for replying. I moved everything on the desktop to a new folder on the OS drive, and I did everything that was asked. But just to note, CA Antivirus keeps being recognized as turned ON by ComboFix. I have been disabling the Antivirus from the Antivirus's settings, and disabling the Firewall (along with CA AntiSpyware) the same way. Previous to my first posting, I have tried putting CA Antivirus on snooze mode but Combofix still reports it as ON. Also, when Combofix restarts the computer b/c of rootkit activity, everything gets turned back on. I repeat the same actions of turning off the Antivirus and Firewall while Combofix is working.
    I can not attach gmer log.log b/c it is 355 KB, so i split it into two text files. Also, MGlogs.zip was in a previous post so I attached "This is just to change the size of MGlogs.zip.txt" to the zip file to change the zip size.
    -Thanks Again

    Did you turn off your disc emulation software?? Most of what I had you fix did not get done. That, or you ran MGTools before you applied the fixes.

    Now download The Avenger by Swandog469, and save it to your Desktop.

    * Extract+ avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop

    Please download and save this mbr.exe to your C:\Windows folder. Just save it there. Do not attempt to run it.

    You need to turn off Dameon tools, your AV program and any AS programs you have running.

    Now go to TDSSKiller and Download TDSSKiller.zip to your Desktop
    • Extract its contents to your Desktop so that you have TDSSKiller.exe directly on your Desktop and not in any subfolder of the Desktop.
    • Click Start > Run and copy/paste the following bold command into Run box and hit Enter.
    "%userprofile%\Desktop\TDSSKiller.exe" -v
    • Follow the instructions to type in "delete" when it asks you what to do when if finds something.
    • When done, a log file should be created on your C: drive named something like TDSSKiller.2.1.1_27.12.2009_14.17.04_log.txt which is based on the program version # and date and time run. Please attach this log to your next reply.

    Then, we will try again:

    Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

    * Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    * -Do not change any check box options!!
    * Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it into the Input script here: part of the window:

    * Now click the Execute button.
    * Click Yes to the prompt to confirm you want to execute.
    * Click Yes to the Reboot now? question that will appear when Avenger finishes running.
    * Your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    * A log file from Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt and it will popup for you to view when you login after reboot.

    Then attach the below logs:

    * C:\ComboFix.txt
    * C:\MGlogs.zip

    Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

    I used the defrogger program to disable the disc emulation software. Then I double clicked analyse.exe and did all the steps that you put down. BUT i'm just realizing that I might not have double clicked on the GetLogs.bat file (Gmer took about 6 hours to finish and I was just tired). Sorry about the mistake!
    About these next steps, I can not download Avenger. With the antivirus on, it detects 2 files Win32/Crykee.A trojan and deletes them, then making the connection to the server no accessable. But also when I turn the AV, AS, and firewall off from CA, the connection to the download site is not able to be found (also the same thing from SAFEMODE). So I dont know if its the sites fault, my comp's fault, or if its malware. After this I downloaded mbr.exe, but I dont know if u want me to go on without downloading avenger.zip. sorry again for the first mistake.

  8. dougdarby10

    The combofix.txt and the mglogs.zip are the same files from the previous scans. Probably b/c I did not press Fix on HJT program....The reason for this is that the files you want fixed are no longer there to be fixed. To produce a log for you to look at I ran a scan&savelog from HJT.
    The computer seems to be working fine. The reason I posted in the first place was b/c Combofix results were scaring me with the rootkit infections, also the Bifrost& WinAntivirus Pro 2006& WinSpyware Protect files that kept getting detected by CA's Spyware. But I cant scan anything myself until you tell me too. right?

    -Thanks

    What issues are you still having?

    I just ran CA anti-spyware quickscan and came up with Bifrost, WinAntivirus Pro 2006, and WinSpyware Protect infections. But for issues that affect me other than security, I have no issues. If you think these files are wrongly viewed as infections by CA, I have no problems with my computer. I saved a log from CA anti-spyware. The last 3 lines are the latest infections found.

    -Thanks again

    My question would be why do you keep getting infected? From the looks of that log, you have been hit numerous times.

    CA would have changed your logs perhaps, so let me once more see a new MGlogs.zip by double clicking on C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat.

    since 4/30 which was the first time I have used Combofix I would get those last 3 infections (Bifrost& WinAntivirus Pro 2006& WinSpyware Protect). After combofix would finish working and restarting the computer, I would use CA Anti-spyware to scan quickly if there were things the rootkit infection was hiding and thats when I find those 3 infections. Thats why I ask if it is combofix related (false detection of an infection) or something else.

    -thanks (I didn't know you'd be helping me on the weekends too :p )

    I am here most every day, as long as people keep getting infected.

    I would only suggest you clean out this folder:
    C:\Documents and Settings\Kobe24\Local Settings\temp\

    Otherwise, I am not seeing any malware issues.

    If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    4. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    5. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    6. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    7. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    8. If you are running Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 6 of the READ ME for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    9. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

    first off, I had a funeral to go to, and just returned to my computer today. So very sorry about the late response.
    I just restarted my computer for windows updates reasons, and found out that my comp is changing the free space size back and forth on restart .If nothing is changed on the comp, the free space size will decrease on restart and then increase on another restart. This could be because someone else used my comp (very reliable person). Or it could be that they opened the Guest account where I did not do the fixes u instructed me to do on there. Also, whats the most reliable way to scan a usb drive.

    -Thanks

    I would suggest that you run your AV protection software as well as SAS and MBAM on the system with the flash drive plugged in. Make sure you have all of that updated with the latest definitions. :)

    I checked on both user accounts including guest on regular mode and on administrator account for safemode. everything came up relatively clean but the drive free-space is STILL changing . Therefore i am guessing there is a problem with the hardware. If this is all the help you can give me, thanks for helping me these past couple of weeks.

    -Thanks again.

    Perhaps you are just out of free disk space because you have filled up all of your Drives. Your logs show you don't have adequate free space especially on your boot drive
    Code:
    Drive C:
    Description Local Fixed Disk
    Compressed No
    File System NTFS
    Size 74.52 GB (80,015,491,072 bytes)
    Free Space 857.81 MB ([B][COLOR=red]899,477,504 bytes[/COLOR][/B])
    Volume Name
    Volume Serial Number 1C03A945

    Drive D:
    Description Local Fixed Disk
    Compressed No
    File System NTFS
    Size 186.31 GB (200,049,614,848 bytes)
    Free Space 1.64 GB [COLOR=red][B](1,762,402,304 bytes[/B][/COLOR])
    Volume Name
    Volume Serial Number 8085B56C

    Drive E:
    Description Local Fixed Disk
    Compressed No
    File System NTFS
    Size 596.17 GB (640,133,447,680 bytes)
    Free Space 759.95 MB ([B][COLOR=red]796,868,608 bytes[/COLOR][/B])
    Volume Name Data640
    Volume Serial Number 545FB5C2

    Don't forget you need free space for Windows caching and virtual memory while it is running and free space will decrease to allow for this. You don't have enought free to properly run. And each time you boot or install software or updates, system restore points are created which require disk space. You need to get rid of whatever you are storing in around 800 GB of disk space.
