    Dear MajorGeek malware fighters, you helped me big time with an issue on my desktop earlier this year but now I've got problems with my daughter's laptop. She started getting BSOD a few days ago with an error reporting bqxik.sys. I have followed the protocol and have attached the logs.
    After running SAS in safe mode (only way it would run) I could then boot normally and ran the rest. On running MG tools I again got the same BSOD and am now in safe mode again. There is a MGLogs.zip produced which I will attach to the next post.
    Thanks, Mark.

    Good afternoon.

    Important Notice: A new version of SUPERAntiSpyware is available.
    • Please uninstall your current version (this is necessary).
    • Then download this SUPERAntiSpyware
    • Install this new version. It may tell you that you need to reboot to complete the installation. You must reboot at this time.
    • After the reboot, run SUPERAntiSpyware and immediately click the Check for Updates button to get more updates for the database.
    • Now run a new full scan of your system. And attach this log later.

    Now we need to use ComboFix
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    • If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box. Ensure you scroll down to select ALL the lines:
    Code:
    KILLALL::

    Driver::
    10DDF9FE6DE04F40
    F9DE943A544E141C

    File::
    C:\Windows\System32\drivers\bqxik.sys
    c:\windows\system32\10DDF9FE6DE04F40\10DDF9FE6DE04F40
    c:\windows\system32\F9DE943A544E141C\F9DE943A544E141C
    C:\Windows\temp\6cef9b4c91c057c15c657d91.tmp
    C:\Windows\temp\6fdb5314fe9f74f4df0a2a43.tmp

    Folder::
    c:\windows\system32\10DDF9FE6DE04F40\10DDF9FE6DE04F40
    c:\windows\system32\F9DE943A544E141C\F9DE943A544E141C

    Registry::
    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\system\ControlSet001\Services\10DDF9FE6DE04F40]
    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\system\ControlSet001\Services\F9DE943A544E141C]
    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\system\ControlSet001\Services\bqxik]

    RegLock::
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\system\ControlSet001\Control\Class\{4D36E96D-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}\0000\AllUserSettings]

    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe

      http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif

    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below

    Note:

    Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

    NOTE: When we are finished here you should consider updating from AVG Free 8.5 to the most current version. Always stay up to date with your protection software.

    Run C:\MGTools\analyse.exe do a system scan and save a log file to attach here for my reviewal with any other logs that I request.

    Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this.

    Also attach the HJT log from running analyse.exe and the new SAS log.

    Tell me how things are running now! :)

    Thanks for your reply and advice. I uninstalled SAS and installed the new one (running in safe mode due to BSOD). Log attached. Following a reboot still had BSOD. In safe mode again. Tried to copy script but wordpad would not let me save a txt file. I saved it on a stick on another PC and loaded it to desktop that way. Ran OK with Combofix. Log attached. Rebooted normally through this process.
    Ran MG tools as instructed and logs are attached.
    I have not rebooted since this but all seems OK so far. I am sending this before I reboot in case BSOD returns.
    When we have fixed this I will probably ditch AVG and install Antivir on this laptop. I have used it on my desktop PC since I cleaned up earlier this year and it seems to do work well.

    Let's try again, damn thing didn't die. Get this done as soon as you are back on friday! :)

    Hi, back again and just ran CF and MBAM. Just to note that before I left I decided to get rid of AVG and install Antivir because it seems to work better (experience on my desktop PC) and seems easier to disable when I want to run CF etc. As part of the install Antivir ran a complete scan and found the rootkit. I have therefore attached the log from Antivir as well.

    Looks OK so far. How did the logs look? Shall I go through the steps following successful removal?

    The logs look good to me. Use the computer for a few hours and report back to me this evening. If all seems well then I will post final steps.

    Still OK. Ran Avira and SAS and nothing reported. Time for final steps?

    Yes I believe so. :)

    If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Go back to step 6 of the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders
      related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
        for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

    Hi, Antivir did pick something up in last nights scan
    JAVA/Agent.BH Java virus and I have attached the log. I won't start the cleanup quite yet just in case.....

    I wouldn't worry about that, your AV is just doing it's job. It's hard to say whether what it is flagging is really a problem or not, nothing to fret about anyway. You can follow final steps.

    All done and a paid version of SAS installed. Just in time for Ellie to take her laptop back to Uni! So many thanks from me and her for all your help. Hopefully she can avoid getting infected again;).
