Rootkit Problem

Hallo everyone. Since last night my computer was attacked by rootkit virus, I remembered I downloaded topaz for photoshop and it started to show. I already had malware installed so for every few minutes it popped saying it detected malware activity and I always quarantined and deleted it.
For unknown reason, adobe flash player kept installing itself and I had to close it every time it did.
I was afraid cause I read somewhere rootkit can steal my passwords, I'm a paypal user and also online banking!

so I've followed the READ AND RUN ME FIRST thread completely, when I tried to run MGtools, the text 'ntvdm has encountered a system error fix' showed up, but the program ran nonetheless.

I hope it was enough to clear the problem, cause adobe flash has stopped to install itself, but I'm not sure at all and that's why I post here.

I've compressed the 5 logs as a zip file.

Thank you for your time, have a good day.

Please attach the MGLogs.zip separately. I can not open it.

Do you know what these are? If not, delete them:
    c:\documents and settings\aaron\Application Data\wincoreimband
    c:\documents and settings\aaron\Application Data\Smadav
    c:\documents and settings\aaron\Application Data\Hysa
    c:\documents and settings\aaron\Application Data\Dehyes

Hallo I'm sorry for the late reply, I was planning on waiting for 5 days.
Smadav is my antivir, but the folders you've mentioned are empty except Dehyes, so I've deleted them all.
I've attached the MGLogs, thank you for your help.

I am not familiar with Smadav. And I don't see it in your Add/Remove programs list.

Do you know what this is:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\11A9D6CD89.sys ? Right click it and tell me what is listed under properties.

    Use CCleaner or manually remove:
    C:\WINDOWS\Temp\4cf2d3d2
    C:\WINDOWS\Temp\6b813dff
    C:\WINDOWS\Temp\6d70bfe2
    C:\WINDOWS\Temp\c27a3bb1
    C:\WINDOWS\Temp\f10b632

Now tell me what issues you may still have, if any.

Smadav is a local antivirus, it's originally installed in this laptop. I just realized it doesn't appear in add or remove hardware list.

    11A9D6CD89.sys
type of file : system file
    opens with : unknown application
    locations : C:\WINDOWS\system32
    size : 56 bytes (56 bytes)
    size on disk : 4,00KB (4.096 bytes)
    created: 30 March 2012 19:31:34
    modified: 30 March 2012 19:31:35
    accessed: 16 April 2012 0:32:50
    attributes: read only

    I could only remove C:\WINDOWS\Temp\4cf2d3d2
the others are being used by program
I've used CCleaner as well but it didn't remove them (system - temp files checked)

I noticed there are many folders which named like $NtUninstallKBB(numbers here)$ in my C:\WINDOWS folder, and they are blue colored. Are they harmful?
After I went through READ AND RUN ME FIRST, there were seemingly no problems and the laptop ran just like usual. Malwarebytes didn't detect any more rootkit or blocked website for every 2 seconds.
The problem is that I'm not sure whether they are really gone for good..
    thank you, good night.

Download The Avenger by Swandog46 to your Desktop.

See the download links under this icon http://forums.majorgeeks.com/chaslang/images/MGDownloadLoc.gif

    1. Extract avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop.

Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following (re-enable when you are finished):
      1. Extract avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop.
      2. Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
      3. Click OK at the warning to continue to use The Avenger
      4. Do not change any of the check box options!
      5. Shut down your protection software now to avoid possible conflicts.
      6. Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it into the Input script here: part of The Avenger
      7. Now click the http://img33.imageshack.us/img33/9159/executeavenger.jpg button
      8. Click Yes to the prompt to confirm you want to execute.
      9. Click Yes to the Reboot now? question that will appear when The Avenger finishes running.
      10. Your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
      11. A log file from The Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt and it will pop-up for you to view when you login after reboot.
      12. Attach this log to your next message. (See: HOW TO: Attach Items To Your Post )

      No they are not harmful.

Since I am not finding any other evidence of malware, you can do the following once you are sure your system is running normally:

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
      1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no real time protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.We recommend them for doing backup scans when you suspect a malware infection.
      2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
        • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
        • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
          • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
          • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.

      3. Go back to step 6 of the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
      4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
      5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
      6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
      7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
      8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
      9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
        • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
        • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.

      10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

Malware removal from a National Chain = $149
Malware removal from MajorGeeks = $0

Hello, have done that, the log is attached. (I checked the temp folder afterwards but those 5 files still exist)

I forgot mentioning one problem, whenever I go to E-bay and click on 'Find' button, it freezes, after some refreshes and do-overs, a window saying I need to give my credit card number and another sensitive information appears, which I realized it's actually not from E-bay. After one more refresh, I can finally search like usual. But this always happens again after a shut down (at least that's what I realized)
Searched on google, found out it's also the work from malware, do you know how to fix this?

one more question.. should I in the future get attacked again by rootkit, can my passwords really be stolen? does it impose great danger for my bank account (losing money)?
    thank you, good night.

My bad, let's do it again.

    1. Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    2. Click OK at the warning to continue to use The Avenger
    3. Do not change any of the check box options!
    4. Shut down your protection software now to avoid possible conflicts.
    5. Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it into the Input script here: part of The Avenger
    6. Now click the http://img33.imageshack.us/img33/9159/executeavenger.jpg button
    7. Click Yes to the prompt to confirm you want to execute.
    8. Click Yes to the Reboot now? question that will appear when The Avenger finishes running.
    9. Your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    10. A log file from The Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt and it will pop-up for you to view when you login after reboot.
    11. Attach this log to your next message. (See: HOW TO: Attach Items To Your Post )

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista or Win7, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).Make sure that you watch for the license agreement for TrendMicro HijackThis and click on the Accept button TWICE to accept ( yes twice ).

    Then attach the below logs:

    * C:\MGlogs.zip

Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

  9. whatnot

    whatnot Private E-2

Have done those, the logs are attached

    the problem still persists:
    Thank you.

Go to the below link and follow the instructions for running TDSSKiller from Kaspersky

Be sure to attach your log from TDSSKiller

Please also download MBRCheck to your desktop.

See the download links under this icon http://forums.majorgeeks.com/chaslang/images/MGDownloadLoc.gif

    • Double click MBRCheck.exe to run (vista and Win 7 right click and select Run as Administrator)
    • It will show a Black screen with some information that will contain either the below line if no problem is found:
      • Done! Press ENTER to exit...
    • Or you will see more information like below if a problem is found:
      • Found non-standard or infected MBR.
      • Enter 'Y' and hit ENTER for more options, or 'N' to exit:
    • Either way, just choose to exit the program at this point since we want to see only the scan results to begin with.
    • MBRCheck will create a log named similar to MBRCheck_07.16.10_00.32.33.txt which is random based on date and time.
    • Attach this log to your next message. (See: HOW TO: Attach Items To Your Post )

The logs are attached. I think the above mentioned problem has ceased to exist, I've just tested searching in Ebay.

MBRCheck is reporting an unknown MBR. Do you have your XP cd? If you do, go into your bios and change the boot order to CD/DVD as first boot device. Insert the disc and reboot. Go into the Recovery Console and type:
    fixmbr

Exit out and reboot to normal mode and re-run MBRCheck. Attach the log.

I don't have the cd on me and neither does the laptop have cd-drive..
