Rootkit TLD3, Rogue.MySecurityShield

Symptoms: Redirecting when I try to visit MajorGeeks.com or other malware removal sites after searching for it in Google (behavior seems to be IE only) (STATUS: Not anymore after doing malware removal steps)

DLink wireless desktop adapter application also crashes upon Windows startup (STATUS: Not anymore after doing malware removal steps)

"Generic windows host service" crashes out (STATUS: Not anymore after doing malware removal steps)

Prior to malware removal, AVG 11 was reporting that I have infection coming from c:\windows\system32\calcpgds.dll. The warning came up at least 20-30 times while I was trying to do malware removal steps.

Prior to attempting malware removal steps, I followed exactly what you said in your READ ME FIRST thread about malware removal - running ATFCleaner, CCLeaner, removing temporary files, etc.

SUPERAntiSpyware reported that I have Rogue.MySecurityShield, and successfully removed (see log)

ComboFix reported that I have Rootkit TLD3, and said it successfully removed that as well (see log)

Additional steps I took afterward: running Windows update, uninstalling AVG 11, installing Avira AntiVir Personal Edition

I have not created a new system restore point yet - wanted to make sure I'm completely out of the woods before I make a new one (which is why I'm asking here - to see if I'm out of the woods).

Just wanted to post logs and see if you feel that my malware is thoroughly removed and whether there should be more steps to take.

Attached are 4 logs- attaching the 5th log in the next reply.

I thought I did attach it in my 2nd reply? Had to put it into next reply as I had 4-attachment limit for a post :)

    Hi!

:-D We both were busy typing while the other was posting! Note this below my reply:
*Now - just a little work to do and performing some follow-up checks....

*Other than the tools our guide instructed you to save there, I strongly recommend that you clean up this account's Desktop immediately leaving only shortcut links. [ C:\Documents and Settings\Anita Flannagan\Desktop ] Do not store downloads, exe files, iso files....etc on your Desktop. First it is not a safe place to keep them (i.e., you may loose them due to malware, and a cluttered Desktop is an easy hiding place for malware), and last but not least - it can have an effect on your PCs performance.

Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following (re-enable when you are finished):

    Step 1:
Now we need to use ComboFix.
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware, firewall...etc) programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix. *Remember to re-start them before coming back online.
    • If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text inside of the below code box into it (make sure you scroll all the way down in the code box to get all lines selected ):
    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
If it asks you to overide the previous file with the same name, click YES.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
      http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif
    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

    Step 2:
Open CCleaner - select "Cleaner" > "Run Cleaner" <---use this function ONLY!

    Step 3:
Please download TDSSKiller from Kaspersky to your directly onto your Desktop
    • Now double click the TDSSkiller.exe file to run it ( if using Vista or Windows 7 do not double click on it but rather, right click and select Run As Administrartor. )
    • Allow the application to run if prompted by Windows or any security programs you have installed
    • It will start the scan and run rather quickly and will notify you of whether anything is found or not.
    • Follow the instructions to delete/quarantine if asks you what to do when if finds something.
    • Whether an infection is found or not, a log file should be created on your C: drive ( or whatever drive you boot from) in the root folder named something like TDSSKiller.2.1.1_27.12.2009_14.17.04_log.txt which is based on the program version # and date and time run. Please attach this log to your next reply.
After a reboot, continue with the below.

    Step 4:
Please also download MBRCheck to your desktop.
    • Double click MBRCheck.exe to run (vista and Win 7 right click and select Run as Administrator)
    • It will show a Black screen with some information that will contain either the below line if no problem is found:
      • Done! Press ENTER to exit...
    • Or you will see more information like below if a problem is found:
      • Found non-standard or infected MBR.
      • Enter 'Y' and hit ENTER for more options, or 'N' to exit:
    • Either way, just choose to exit the program at this point since we want to see only the scan results to begin with.
    • MBRCheck will create a log named similar to MBRCheck_07.16.10_00.32.33.txt which is random based on date and time.
    • Attach this log to your next message.

    Step 5:
Then run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista or Windows 7, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

Please attach the below logs to your next reply:
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
    • TDSSKillerlog.txt
    • MBRChecklog.txt

    * Make sure you tell me if you had any problems running this procedure; and answer this - "What malware problems are you still experiencing?"

I'm about to take a lunch break, however I see that you now have both AVG and Avira's AntiVir Desktop installed... definitely a bad idea having two anti-virus programs! You were cautioned against this and
Please make no further changes to your machine until you are instructed when I post again.

Yes, I noticed that in the log too and am not sure why it is showing I still have AVG 11 as it was uninstalled already and it is no longer showing up under "Add/Remove Programs" in Windows. No AVG tray icon is running, and no items are showing up in the Start menu, etc. It's like I have a "ghost" instance of AVG showing up in the logs somehow.

BTW I did mention I took this action in the OP. I have been meaning to remove AVG for some time now and I took a proactive approach by uninstalling it and installing Avira's AntiVir instead - this was after I completed all the initial "README" scans & removals - without realizing the README advised against that. My apologies.

    Enjoy your lunch break!

I'm sorry, that part escaped me flagging it when you posted.

Ok, only an outdated Java and AVG remnants to handle. Then we should be ready to wrap this thread up:

Please look in Add/Remove Programs (Programs and Features if using Vista or Windows 7) for the following and uninstall if found. If you get any errors just make a note and continue on.
Now we need to use ComboFix again.

Then run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista or Windows 7, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

Please attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file to your next reply. (The ComboFix.txt log will be embedded in it.)

    Ahhh, that's better!

*Using Windows Explorer, please navigate to and delete if found:
    C:\Documents and Settings\Anita Flannagan\Application Data\AVG10

...then run CCleaner and re-boot. That should take care of the the last AVG straggler I find.

Your logs look good! If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Go back to step 6 of the READ ME and re-enable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have re-enabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders
related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work through the below link:

    Removed AVG10 remanents.

    Ran CCleaner

    ComboFix uninstalled

    MGTools removed via MGClean.bat

Completed steps in "Protect yoursel from malware" thread

    The tools I am choosing:
One real-time blocking: Avira's AntiVir Personal Edition
Spybot, with Immunize and SDHelper enabled
    SpywareBlaster, with all protection enabled

Also, I like to use Secunia PSI, which I think is okay with those tools - since it only monitors my installed programs/applications and tells me which one is outdated and poses a potential security threat. Current score is 100%. Please advise me if this is okay.

Just a question about Spybot - how do I know it's running/enabled in background? I don't see any tray icon there that indicates it's running in background (weird, because I thought I used to see one, but that might be for TeaTimer only, which I have decided to disable because like your threads said, it caused me problems in the past). But when I start up interface, it shows Immunize and SDHelper enabled. Just not sure if it's running in background.

I think this pretty much wraps it up. Thanks for your help, much appreciated!

A bit of side question - do you have any sort of training/schools for teaching people how to take care of malware in such an organized and disciplined way you guys do at this site?

    Hi, cflannagan

    You're welcome!

Your protection applications selection is good - no problems there; and your logs show Spybot's "SDHelper" (Internet Explorer bad download blocker) is active.

*You might checkout this thread if you're interested in learning malware removal at one of the free online training schools.

One last note - don't forget to use a better firewall than the one that comes with Windows XP!
