    Hi,
My PC has been infected with a rootkit virus (Win32:Sirefef-PL[Rtk]). I believe I have removed the infected files but my PC just isnt the same. I had already decided to upgrade before this happened anyway as it is 7 years old. My question is if I copy my photos to a memory stick, will this then infect the new PC when I go to put them on? I was told by a friend that the virus may come across with the photos.

Also when I use the new PC online to update the virus protection, will it be at risk instantly due to using the same network or will the virus be contained to the old PC?

Sorry, I am just clued up enough on this

    Thanks for any help
    Ruairi

This should be okay, but you can also always scan ( with your AV ) the files after they are on your USB memory stick and before you copy the to a new PC.

No as long as you have not already infected the new PC somehow. Make sure you install protection on it before connecting to the internet. That is, if it does not already have an antivirus, antispyware, and firewall installed and activated then you should use another PC to get these and burn the to a CD or your USB stick and then install them on the new PC before connecting to the internet.

If for some reason you just cannot get the protection installed before connecting to the internet, then this should be the very first thing you do after connecting.
