A few days ago I was drunk and downloading music. I clicked on a link to a webpage, a java window popped up, and everything froze up. Now I have this rootkit. It returns everytime I remove it. Please help me.

    Thanks.

    1. Important Notice: A new version of SUPERAntiSpyware is available.
    • Please uninstall your current version (this is necessary).
    • Then download this SUPERAntiSpyware
    • Install this new version. It may tell you that you need to reboot to complete the installation. You must reboot at this time.
    • After the reboot, run SUPERAntiSpyware and immediately click the Check for Updates button to get more updates for the database.
    • Now run a new full scan of your system. And attach this log later.

    2. Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following (re-enable when you are finished):

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    After clicking Fix exit HJT.

    3. Now we need to use ComboFix
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    • If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box. Ensure you scroll down to select ALL the lines:
    Code:
    KILLALL::

    Driver::
    Remote Packet Capture Protocol v.0
    XJWRH

    File::
    c:\windows\system32\drivers\nlagya.sys
    c:\documents and settings\All Users\Application Data\ISx32.tmp
    c:\windows\S06259127.tmp
    C:\DOCUME~1\ADMINI~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\XJWRH.exe
    c:\windows\system32\dmrezoom.dll
    C:\Documents and Settings\David\Application Data\wqhtpi.dat

    Folder::
    c:\documents and settings\All Users\Application Data\Viewpoint

    Registry::
    [HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
    "DWQueuedReporting"=-

    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe

      http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif

    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below

    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

    4. Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this.

    5. Tell me how the machine is running now?

Now download The Avenger by Swandog469, and save it to your Desktop.

    • Extract avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop
    • Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    • Do not change any check box options!!
    • Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it into the Input script here: part of the window:
    • Now click the Execute button.
    • Click Yes to the prompt to confirm you want to execute.
    • Click Yes to the Reboot now? question that will appear when Avenger finishes running.
    • Your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    • A log file from Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt and it will popup for you to view when you login after reboot.

Run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this.

Is the machine still running nicely now? :)

That's good, but there is still something I would like to check out. :)

Did you knowingly ever at one time install WinPcap?

Now use windows explorer to find and delete the below bold file:

    C:\WINDOWS\S06259127.tmp

Let me know if it goes quietly, or if you have issues deleting it. If you have problems, try renaming it to S06259127.tmp.old and try again.

  8. MTZ

    MTZ Private E-2

    I never knowingly installed WinPcap.

I can not delete or rename the S06259127.tmp file. I get an error message that it is being used by another person or program.

  9. Kestrel13!

Kestrel13! Super Malware Fighter - Major Dilemma Staff Member

Boot the machine into safe mode and have a go at killing it or renaming it and THEN killing it. Let me know. It's an unusual file that I don't recognise as being a legit windows file, and further more, the fact it does not want to be modified makes me even more suspicious.

If safe mode deletion/rename > deletion fails then we can take a closer look at the file or maybe get it scanned by jotti or similar. :)

  10. MTZ

    MTZ Private E-2

I was able to delete the file in safe mode, but after I rebooted I checked the WINDOWS folder and the file has returned.

    Stubborn huh? Try this:

    Delete file/folder
Press Start->Run, copy/paste the following command into the box and press OK:
A blank command window will open on your desktop, then close in a minute or two. This is normal.
A file called look.txt should appear on your Desktop. Please post the contents of this file.

It may well fail so, if so we will then run this to see if it upturns whatever's hiding.

GMER - running with a random name

    • When the scan is complete, click Save and save the log onto your Desktop where it should be easy for you to find.
    • Attach the log to your next message.

Let me know if the file still exists or not after running the batch file.

  12. MTZ

    MTZ Private E-2

The command line did not delete the file or create a log.

GMER takes about 7 hours to complete scanning and when I try to save a log it crashes. :(

Ok. Let's try this then before I consult colleagues about it:

Download OTM by Old Timer and save it to your Desktop.

    Code:
    :Files
    C:\WINDOWS\S06259127.tmp

    :Commands
    [emptytemp]
    [Reboot]
    • Return to OTM, right click in the Paste List of Files/Folders to Move window (under the yellow bar) and choose Paste.
    • Push the large http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2782/4174320048_f01c448b32_o.png button.
    • OTM may ask to reboot the machine. Please do so if asked.
    • Copy everything in the Results window (under the green bar), and paste it in your next reply.

NOTE: If you are unable to copy/paste from this window (as will be the case if the machine was rebooted), open Notepad (Start->All Programs->Accessories->Notepad), click File->Open, in the File Name box enter *.log and press the Enter key, navigate to the C:\_OTM\MovedFiles folder, and open the newest .log file present, and copy/paste the contents of that document back here in your next post.

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this, and also attach the log from OTM.

  14. MTZ

    MTZ Private E-2

I was not able to copy from the results window. When OTM finished, my browser and taskbar disappeared. My only choice was to reboot.

Ahhh...damn thing. I am not sure whether the file I am trying to delete is malware or not. It is only 0 bytes in size so probably nothing to be frantic about, trying to delete it won't hurt as it's a temp file but it is obviously in use by some program and I would like to know what.

I like to cover all bases and fear sending you away with doubt still in my mind...so... let's now try this please so that I can examine the file for myself.

Could you please get this: S06259127.tmp into a zipped file and attach it for me in your next post? To do this, see the below:

Please go to start > Run and paste in the following:
    log retrievable @ C:\collect.zip

    OK,

    The file 'C:\System Volume Information\_restore{129201FA-B0AC-49B3-96B2-DEB8B91E727B}\RP1326\A0366503.sys'
contained a virus or unwanted program 'RKIT/Bubnix.S' [trojan]
    Action(s) taken:
The file was moved to the quarantine directory under the name '4ec77a6a.qua'.

    WinPcap is at C:\Qoobox\Quarantine\C\Program Files\WinPcap

    How do I uninstall it?

  20. Kestrel13!

Kestrel13! Super Malware Fighter - Major Dilemma Staff Member

My bad...of course you can't uninstall it.
Well not to worry, because once we finish final steps, system restore can be flushed and you will no longer have the threat detected.

I am sorry to keep you hanging but I am trying to seek advice on what to do about that file that will not die! I know that your PC is running nicely but I still feel the need to dig deeper. Hang in there whilst I ask colleagues about it all. :)

Ahhh the collect.zip failed to work. Right click the file and send to zipped file. Attach it here.

And we never did upload the file to be scanned like I said we would! So we'll do that now.

Please go to Jotti's malware scan

(If more than one file needs scanned they must be done separately and logs posted for each one)
    • Copy the file path in the below Code box:
      Code:
      C:\WINDOWS\S06259127.tmp
    • At the upload site, click the browse button.
    • Next click Submit file
    • Your file will possibly be entered into a queue which normally takes less than a minute to clear.
    • This will perform a scan across multiple different virus scanning engines.
    • Important: Wait for all of the scanning engines to complete.
    • Once the scan is finished, Copy and then Paste the link in the address bar into your next reply.

    I can't zip the file:

    C:\WINDOWS\S06259127.zip: Cannot open S06259127.tmp
The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process.

and Jotti will not scan the file, I get this message:

    File is empty (0 bytes)!

Will post back to you later after talking to colleagues again. I really am undecided as to what to do. The file is in use and it could be in use by a legit application, but I cannot glean any information on the net about it.

I am tempted to give you final instructions considering all is running well with your machine, and I feel like I have been wasting your time, I do like to cover all bases though as mentioned before. But as I said, I'll talk to my friend later and get back to you.

Just another thought... Can you right click the file and send to wordpad or notepad? Open it up and see what information is there.

  28. MTZ

    MTZ Private E-2

It won't let me open it with notepad or wordpad, I get the same error message that it's in use by another application.

Okay let's try one more thing before I give final steps:

You can try LockHunter to see what's locking it. Basically just install LockHunter, Right click the file and choose "What's locking this file".

  30. MTZ

    MTZ Private E-2

It just says "System" and underneath that it says "No path for the process"

Okay would you agree to call it a day? :)

If so then follow the final steps below.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Go back to step 6 of the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders
related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
