Here is WI the DOT has gotten all jazzed about traffic roundabouts, to the point where they have created an entire website about them. They even have a working, interactive animation site:
    http://www.dot.wisconsin.gov/safety/motorist/roaddesign/roundabouts/av/roundabout.swf

    Thought it was a hoot!
A fella from the DOT was at my rotary meeting last week giving this presentation.
Personally, I have no problems with roundabouts, just takes some getting used to and does keep traffic moving faster.

They're all wrong. They are all driving on the wrong side of the road! LOL

You must be from one of those countries where they speak that odd sounding English.
In order to use this guide, you'll need to sit in front of a mirror with a view of your screen behind you. :-D
Or maybe you can find a way to reverse the animations.

I can understand why the US citizens would be confused by these because they are used to turnpikes.

What is even worse is like us who drive on the left and if we go to the UK for a day we have to go around them the other way, it's crazy

Roundabouts are a hoot, while the UK looks like its got chickenpox with all the ones we have, their is some loose rules of the road in our highway code, that anyone from the right (would be left in USA I guess) has priority, good in theory but they are a free for all.

I think I must hit in my 30min drive from work at least 5 of them, 2 directly after each other.

I live in Pennsylvania where we don't really have many (we have jughandles, which are a pain in the butt too.: Link)

In New Jersey, they love their roundabouts. I can't believe I haven't died in one yet.

Awww come on guys, Roundabouts are one of the greatest traffic ideas.
Having been born and raised in England for 28 years and then moving to Canada 5 years ago ... I can honestly say I MISS ROUNDABOTS!
This 4 way stop thing is stupid, no one knows how to use it properly and it stops all traffic dead in it's tracks.
I never understood what was so difficult about roundabouts, give way to the right. 1 simple rule.
4 way stops?...... The person who stopped first has right of way unless you stop together then you give way to straight through or the person turning or something, I can't remember, all I know is so many people wanting to turn left will stop first and sit there waiting for others to pass straight.

    Roundabouts FTW!! :D

Looks like the typical signage at these jughandles Laura are in overkill, would confuse the hell out of most!

    Im with Ned :)

Also you can keep going around and around and around, like going to the funfair but free!

Yep. At least with a roundabout you're just thrown into and have to cope. If you miss a jughandle, you're pretty much screwed and have to go the next light and turn around. The worst are the people that then try to actually turn left when they've missed and about cause a major traffic pile up.

One of my biggest faults when in the US is this thing at a stop light where if you are turning right and the road is clear you can go, I always have the guy behind blasting on the horn.

lmao Yeah thats funny, I actually love the idea of turning right on a red light. It serves me well with some of the frequent paths I must travel and have actually altered my route accordingly :-D

There is a roundabout here in Armpit, and for this place having some of the worst drivers I've ever seen,it actually goes smoothly in that spot.

We have a trial one of those here Bill on a really busy stretch of road thats linking two Motorways (Highways) to the Port (no traffic lights tho the filter lane, you just go), for some years it didnt work too well as many thought the feeder lane which allowed you to join the other road in a new lane was for the traffic coming up behind and on your right to turn into, caused a few accidents and one fight I witnessed in which one driver in the wrong cut out the one in this filter lane, then the other driver rammed the side of his car, ending up with both having a huge fight while traffic is wizzing past them!

Kinda works now as many know what to do.

Did also used to be one at th eend of these two motorways called Switch Island (still is now but not a roundabout but a nightmare of a junction) which was 4 lanes wide feeding the two motorways and 3 dual carriageways (Bill will know these, dunno American term), try and get off that when your on the inside!

LMAO @ Ned on Chevy Chase :)

Even funnier is you Americanos stole most of them from us ;)

.........but we have the common sense not to call one of our towns Dildo. That's in Newfoundland. What country's that in, again? :p

I LOVE being able to turn right on Red (light). Rule of thumb...if the road is clear, ALWAYS turn on red. They will put up a sign that says NO TURN ON RED if you can't. There's nothing worse than being behind someone who just sits there! :p

lol Yeah but Newfoundland is like one giant version of the Orkney Isles lol.....where the greatest town name on the planet is........the quaint little town of.....Twat.

Oh and don't get me wrong, I said British names were silly in a proud way, no one knows how to be silly like us Brits, look at Monty Python lol

We have a round-a-bout on M-43 between Bangor and South Haven, MI. Even with big black arrows on yellow signs pointing in the direction that the traffic is suppose to go, some still get confused and go the opposite direction. rolleyes

I remember my first experience with one of the big German traffic circle, (I think that's the right terminology). I was in Germany on business with two associates, ~1979. Driving a rented Beamer from Dusseldorf to Bonn everyday. On the way back, all of a sudden I'm in this huge circular traffic deali! Holy S***! What do I do now? Traffic on right and left, going 60 or 70 MPH! Crap! Exactly what Chevy experienced. Sweaty palms, wide eyes, general feeling of total panic! I had never seen one of these before, didn't even know they existed. I went around twice before figuring out how and where to get off.

But by the third encounter that week, I was able to drive through one and still read the paper. :-D:-D:-D

Sorry Laura if you were stuck behind me but my brain is imprinted with the European thing that red is stop and wait for green.

    Max,
Looks like it'd be a good idea to have a full tank of gas, (petrol, to those across the pond), before entering that mother! :-D
