    Hi,

I suspect that this is a non-issue but I would be grateful for confirmation either way. The firewall in my router has started sending me messages reporting attempted hacks (I've had around 30 reports on 3 separate occasions, all from same IP). Here is a copy of the text:
    Dear User
Your router has detected and protected you against an attempt to gain access to your network. This may have been an attempted hacker intrusion, or perhaps just your Internet Service Provider doing routine network maintenance.
Most of these network probes are nothing to be worried about - these types of random probes should NOT be reported, but you may want to report repeated intrusions attempts. Save this email for comparison with future alert messages.
    Your router Alert Information

    Time: 11/23/2006, 23:29:50
    Message: Smurf
    Source: 169.254.255.255
    Destination:169.254.89.90, Type:3, Code:3 (from PVC1 Outbound)

Visit the UXN Combat Spam web site to get more detailed information about the intruder - http://combat.uxn.com/
    1. Type the intruder's IP address into the IP WHOIS search engine
    2. Click the Query Button
    3. Detailed network and administration information will be displayed
Is this something I should do something about or is it innocuous? Note that I wasn't doing anything apart from snoring at 23:29!!

    All advice gratefully received.

    Rgds, Paul

    Hi

Someone more used to networks will most likely have to correct me, but IPs with 169.255.xxx.xxx are local network addresses and that one seems to come from one of those addresses, do you have a new network setup or ahev you adjusted anything reciently, maybe new wireless laptop?

But to rule of any malware infection which could well be trying to connect either to the outside world from your PC to connect to its masters or trying to portscan you then maybe well worth running through the below

Our standard cleaning procedures which are necessary for us to provide you support. Also there are steps included for installing, running, and posting HijackThis logs as attachments.
    • Run ALL the steps in this Sticky thread READ & RUN ME FIRST Before Asking for Support
    • Make sure you check version numbers and get all updates.
    • Very Important: Make sure you tell us the results from running the tutorial...was anything found? Were you unable to complete any of the scans?...Were you unable to download any of the tools?...Did you do the on-line scans as suggested? etc.
    • After doing ALL of the above you still have a problem make sure you have booted to normal mode and run the steps in the below link to properly use HijackThis and attach a log:
    Downloading, Installing, and Running HijackThis

Make sure you also rename HijackThis.exe as suggested in the procedures. Use analyse.exe for the new name. This is very important due to some new infections going around.

    • When you return to make your next post, make sure you attach the following logs and that you have run these scans in the following order too:
      • CounterSpy
      • AVG Antispyware log - ONLY IF NEEDED you were not able to run CounterSpy
      • Bitdefender - from step 6
      • Panda Scan - from step 6
      • runkeys.txt - the log from GetRunKey.bat
      • newfiles.txt - the log from ShowNew.bat
      • HijackThis
NOTE: You can only attach 3 files in a single message so it will require that you use two messages to attach all of these logs!
