Router for $40 or less?

I have a BEFSR41 that isn't working properly for my Sat internet and has to be used as a switch or it'll drop connection at random till it's reset. The ViaSat SurfBeam 2's modem wont do DHCP in a way that I'm allowed to share files over the network.

Someone said this: http://www.amazon.com/Mikrotik-RB750-RB-750-Mini-Router/dp/B004EI0EG4 but it looks too complicated for just hooking up, changing admin pass, and going for it.

Any ideas?

 

The Mikrotik's are a good deal for the money. Forget what the reviews state on Amazon.com. If you want to look at what the various routers stat's. Go to smallnetbuilder.com and you can get the reviews on how they perform.

 

That website seems to only be grading wireless parts of the router rather than quality, longevity, etc ?

edit: Also I only have desktops, so only need wired.

 

smallnetbuilder.com is not for parts of the router. They allow you to compare routers between each other for stuff like WAN to LAN speed, LAN throughput for Ethernet, WiFi, etc.

As for longevity, you are talking about electronics. There is no way to rate the longevity of an electronic item, because of so many factors that vary from where and how the item is used and located.

 

So, what makes the routerboard better than an el cheapo ?

 

Choice. If you go over to dslreports.com to their WISP forum. There is a discussion between the two. Just do a search for "mikrotik".

I guess I'd probably want to go on with that one and have the option of wireless for smartphones, etc.
