    Greetings...

OK, I was running an 8-port Switch (DLink DSS8+) up to Xmas. 5 Computers on the system, no problems (Shaw High Speed - Cable). I got a LinkSys BEFSR81 8-port Wired Router v3 for Xmas. I basically swaped it out for the switch (hooked it up properly, not my first time doing this), and everything goes great. The LAN is working fine, but the internet has problems... some pages load slow or stall (didn't before) and some downloads stall/freeze (didn't before from same sites). Since the router came out of the box configured for my type of system, most of the settings are default. Can anyone give me some help/advice here? Perhaps some setting recommendations, or even some explanations as to why the internet is suddenly messed up. My only thought is that more "invasive" ads are now being blocked, causing some websites to stall when loading.

Thanks in advance for any help!

I suspect your mac address may have changed. To fix this you must hook your old router back up and go to the control panel and release the old mac address. then connect your new router and go into the control panel and renew the mac address.

You may be able to do this through the dos panel on your box using some dos commands, like ipconfig/renew etc, but I don't know the exact commands

Hope this at least points you in the right direction.

Thanks for the reply... I wasn't using a Router before, just a straight switch. I've also tried resetting the router a couple of times... no help.

Did you also reboot the modem by turning off and back on when you installed the router? Slow page loads can be caching problems. I know that if I turn off dynamic DNS on the router I have, pages will load slower then with it on.

You replaced a switch with a router? So is the router doing DHCP? Is the router getting configs from the modem .. like DNS, ect?

    1. Yes, I rebooted the modem too. Flushed every cache I could (I do that regularly anyway).

    2. DHCP, etc. seems to be handled by the router now, yes.

going with what foogoo said, you need to be careful replacing a switch with a router. A router does much more than a switch, for example NAT, DHCP etc...

I assume you are using a cable modem, then connecting that to one of the ports of the router. If both are using DHCP and NAT then you will get a conflict. This could possibly be the cause of your problems. When you were using the switch there was no conflicts because they dont use DHCP and NAT. Disable DHCP and NAT on the router and any other functions that may be duplicated by the modem and see what happens.

OK, thanks... how do I know if the Cable Modem is providing the NAT/DHCP?

the odds are that the modem does have NAT/DHCP since you were previously using a switch to provide internet to 5 computers. A switch doesn't have NAT/DHCP.
