I am trying to install a Netgear N300 router to my Windows XP3, IE8. I attempted to install it via the cd, I got my internet, but no WiFi I think. I got tired a trying to fix it, so I reset it, so I could attempt a manual install. I am supposed to go to www.routerlogin. net to get the setup interface, but I guess that is not a good link'. I tried to go to start, run, ipconfig, to get the ip address so I could try to type it in the address bar, but the screen lasted all of a second. It appeared to be a dos type screen. How do I hold the screen long enough to read it. I am a novice at this sort of thing been trying to figure it out myself but not so good. I am sure I have it hooked up right, I am missing something in the configuring part. Please help, trying to get this thing wified for my grandson so he can use his ipod. Thanks for any help

If you want to get rid of the configuration assistant and go directly to a manual setup:

First to do an ipconfig, without the window closing. go to Start>Run and type CMD & hit <Enter>
Once the console opens type ipconfig
If your ip address does not start 169, you're good.
Look for the default gateway & open IE and type that address.. it may be
    192.168.1.1 or like.
There you should see the router login.

I got the cmd results and they are:

    IP address= 192.168.1.2
    Subnet Mask= 255.255.255.0
    Default Gateway= 192.168.1.1

Are these what they are supposed to be?. I typed the Default Gateway IP in my browser both IE and FF, and FF went to the page http://support.netgear.com/app/home, I could find no place to link to my router.

IE result: The requested URL could not be retrieved

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

While trying to retrieve the URL: http://www.192.168.1.1/

    The following error was encountered:

Unable to determine IP address from host name for www.192.168.1.1
    The dnsserver returned:

Name Error: The domain name does not exist.

What am I missing or doing wrong?

Also, foogoo, what did you mean here "If your ip address does not start 169, you're good."

Open your browser, type in 192.168.1.1 (do not put www in front of it). You will get a popup box for the login. Type in admin (first line) and password (2nd line). Once you hit ok, your configuration software will appear.

Did as suggested, still received this:

    ERROR
The requested URL could not be retrieved

While trying to retrieve the URL: http://192.168.1.1/

    The following error was encountered:

    * Connection Failed

    The system returned:

    (113) No route to host

The remote host or network may be down. Please try the request again.

    Your cache administrator is support.

    I'm at a loss

A 169 IP would be assigned if there was no DHCP contacted. 169 is the Windows default.
