Hi, i´m currently trying to set up a wireless router through an existing cable modem and my PC is receiving signal from the router saying that it is connected and has good strength however i cannot connect to the internet and need some help from the experts here in soughting it out.
Here is a copy of my "ipconfig" results without the router connected at all. I will also post a copy with the router connected and hope that this helps with soughting out my problem. Thanks Scott :confused

The usual way to make sure your router talks to the modem correctly is to power off your computer, power off the router, then power off modem. Then npower on modem wait a few minutes until it has sync'd up with your internet provider. Then power on the router and wait until it syncs up with the modem. Then power up your computer and connect with the wireless.

If you haven't set the router up to use a security encryption , Windows should just connect to the router and not ask for a key code. If the router is set to use WEP, WPA, etc., you will need to get into the router's setup thru your web browser to find which method it's using and to show you the key code to enter.

Hi Sam, thanks for a quick reply. The modem and router are talking to each other and my Pc is picking up the wireless network and saying that it is connected and the signal is strong. However when i go to connect to the internet its not receiving. I am using WPA pre shared encryption with a network key and the router and PC it is set to DCHP to automatically take care of the IP addresses.
I´m thinking that it may be that one of the settings are wrong on the router. When i access the router interface status page its showing that the router has picked up an IP address but the status for Internet is showing no IP address, subnet, gateway ect.
I figured if i posted the ipconfig with both the router and modem connected and post the ipconfig with just the modem connected maybe someone could see if one of the settings appear wrong.
Appreciate your reply and hope you get a better picture of my problem from this response.

    Thanks Scott

    A few things to try...

    • What cable ISP company do you have? Although not an issue with Comcast, some of the smaller ones (TvMax, for example) have to send a reset signal to the cable modem for it to connect to the wi-fi router.
    • Leaving all cables connected, find and press the reset button on the back of the wi-fi router w/ the end of a paper clip; hold it in 30-60 seconds until the front lights indicate it's reset. Next, repeat the basic setup process (unplugging and plugging stuff) WITHOUT using the router mfr's setup disc (in rare cases the setup CDs miss issues with certain modems). Don't set up security or homegroups until you have a connection to the Internet thru the router.
    • To set up your security manually, open IE or Mozilla and enter "192.168.0.1" or "192.168.0.1" (no "www" or ".com"). This should take you to the router's manual setup screen where you can set up passwords, security, network name, etc. If you don't have the router manual, the default router sign-in is "admin"; the password is almost always blank, "admin" or the router brand ("linksys").

I've had these issues when setting up wi-fi on modems from Clear 4G or TvMax. If all else fails, get your money's worth out of the inflated ISP rate your cable company charges and get their tech support to check things on their end during the setup.

    Hope this helps. :)

try disabling dchp in the wireless router as thats what i had to do to use an external wireless router as an access point.

You can call your isp, but generally if its a router they didn't provide they can't support it. There is hundreds of different types of routers, and they cant be expected to know the right setup on each one. You should make sure your internet connection type in your router is set to dhcp or auto obtain information. That should then pull your wan ip address right from your modem.
