Now that I am behind a D-Link Wireless router I am told I no longer require a Firewall...

Don't think I like that to well but I don't know much about routers either.

Yes while a router does protect you from incoming nasty data packets if your router has NAT/SPI firewall built in but you can still if you become infected by malware allow the malwares phone home capabilities to send whatever data its collecting back to base, which is why an outgoing firewall is still worth having,

I have a Wireless Router with NAT/SPI and still have a software firewall in ZoneAlarm installed, to check on what applications are requesting internet access.

Another reason to have a software firewall installed (even if behind a hardware one) is if on a LAN with other users. If one of the other PC users (in my case my sons) indulges in dangerous surfing habits and gets infected with something, there is nothing to keep it from infecting every PC on the LAN. Software firewalls on each LANed computer go a long way in containing an infection.

As the citizens of Troy learned - once the nasty Greeks got into the city their strong walls were no longer any protection . . .

I suggest Zone Alarm, its a good free software firewall for home users (I use it).
There are a few others out there, I'm told Outpost is a good firewall if you're an expert user, owing to its configurability. (No, that isn't a real word)

There are recomendations for firewalls and other anti type tools in this thread:

How to Protect yourself from malware!

This (amongst other things) includes reasons for a Software Firewall, recomendations and links for downloading (part 3)

A lot of people think they are safe behind a NAT router and leave the hardware AND software firewalls turned off. At least one should be enabled, preferably both. It's very easy to get to the computers behind a NAT, even with port forwarding disabled.
Do not believe people who tell you you do not need a firewall!
