RPC error

Hi!
I'm using XP Home Ed SP 2.

After updating my spyware programs I'm having problems installing Avast v. 4.6 Home Ed. I get the "the AAVM Substation detected a RPC error. I followeed direction and went to Service and checked to see if AV and the other one? was set at automatic. I had done this the first time I tried. I went to WINDOWS updates and was told the RCP update was for SP 1, I already had an earlier version. This all started when for the first time they ask for a Registration Key. I juct found it in Properties.

I'm using BellSouth's ICW (Internet Call Waiting), which causes me a lot of aggrevation, but I don't think it is part of theAvast problem, just thought I would mentioned it. Could it be a problem for ZA? I haven't gotten the new version of it installed either and was trying to see if ICW was the problem when this came up too. Unfortunately, my old versions of AVAST are deleted. Everything worked fine until I updated.

In case you are interested, I finally got this fixed using Services: Start->CP->AdminTools->Component Services. I had been there several times but the settings were correct. I finally looked to the left where there was a "Start".command to click on and after doing that Avast was accessible. If this isn't correct, I'm sure someone will jump in and correct me.

Along the way I learned how to Back-up, after downloading it from XP Home Ed, Zip in XP, and burn to my CD RW. At the time I had downloaded XP's latest security files and thought it might help me with the error, but the problem was still there...but set in motion a great learning curve!
