Rtvscan.exe (Symantec) problem

I have Symantec AV Corp Ed 10.1.6 installed on my laptop (free but semi-required courtesy of tech support at my university). The problem is its Rtvscan.exe component uses 53,336K of memory, whereas on my desktop an earlier version (8.0.1) of the same program only uses 2,324K of memory - same settings too as far as I can tell.

Short of removing or disabling the whole program, is there anything I can do? I'd prefer Rtvscan to only use about the same amount of memory on my desktop as laptop.

And if I do remove it, what's a good free alternative?

Get the latest update for your version of Symantec AV Corp in 10.1.6 http://www.symantec.com/business/support/downloads.jsp?pid=51852

I remember the corp versions do tend to be using more ram than the home client versions.

and as a suggestion as you asked, I prefer using Avast Home ( free ) on my laptop, allows you to custom install the components you need, so if you dont need p2p or instant messenging scanners then untick them.
