    I am working on a computer for a friend, he moved here, NH, from Jersey last year and he definitely does not have an XP CD. The computer is a little 13inch dell laptop with no CD drive. I do have an external drive but the computer cannot boot from this. This computer is in seriously bad shape. It had something called AntivirusPro or something which was a fake antivirus which was clearly malware. I was able to get rid of that but somehow rundll32 got deleted. I ran a search and there are no copies of it on the computer, I also looked in the folders recommended in other threads, nothing there that I could see.

    Beyond that I can not run any antivirus or antispyware because it tells me, windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access this item.

    The computer will not boot in safe mode, and there is also a browser hijacker so you actually have to know the url of where you want to go or else you will get redirected.

    Thank you in advance for any help you can offer, I am completely lost.

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

    Please try doing the below:

    Download and save the below to your PC (save it anywhere you can find it. The Desktop is fine). Then double click on it to run it.

    AVPFind.bat

    It should take a couple minutes to run. You will see a black command prompt window while it is running and it should close when it is finished. Once it finishes, attach the c:\avplog.txt file that is will hopefully create as long as the malware does not block the batch file from running.

    Now download and Run exeHelper

    • Please download exeHelper to your desktop.
    • Double-click on exeHelper.com to run the fix.
    • A black window should pop up, press any key to close once the fix is completed.
    • Post the contents of log.txt (Will be created in the directory where you ran exeHelper.com)

    Note: If the window shows a message that says "Error deleting file", please re-run the program before posting a log - and post the two logs together (they will both be in the one file).

    Also please try running the below online scan:

    http://www.superantispyware.com/onlinescan.html

    Reboot immediately after scanning if it finds and removes anything. Let me know if anything was found. It does not save a log.

    Then try running these instructions: Using MGtools

    Attach the below logs when finished with all of the above:

    • C:\avplog.txt - from AVPfind
    • log.txt - from exeHelper
    • C:\MGlogs.zip - from MGtools

    The C:\ assumes that drive C is you Windows boot drive. If you boot from another drive, then use the correct drive letter above.

    Thank you very much. I was able t download and run the first two things you suggestd and their log files are attatched. I was also anle to run superantispyware which found all sosrts of things. It found Trojan.Agent/Gen, Rogue.AntiVirusPlus Adware.Tracking Cookie Rogue.Antivirus-1 and Trojan.Agent/Gen-FA[5M5532]. I was unfortunately not able to get MGtools to work. I downloaded and ran it, it extracted all of the files but there is no MGlog, the only log I could find is called filelog and all it says after all f the files being extracted is"
    * GetLogs.Bat - 01/22/2009 Version 2.28
    * 32 bit Windows OS found
    * GetUnKeys.Bat - 01/23/2009 Version 0.19
    * 32 bit Windows OS found

    The browser hijacker also appears to be gone, clicking on a link from google no longer takes me to random websites.

    Also I was able to get rundll32 off of a different computer, I can now use the control panel again. I am getting a popup from just in time debugging as well, I'm not sure what thats about.

    You should have a C:\MGLogs.zip if C:\MGTools.exe ran.

    For MGtools, did you save MGtools.exe to C:\MGtools.exe as requested. It must be save to the root folder of your Windows boot drive. Do not save it anywhere else and do not attempt to Run or Open it from the download link. You must save it to your PC. Please try again and make sure you follow the instructions exactly. If you get any error messages, see if it is one of the ones that are explained on the download page. If the error is not on the download page, give us the exact word for word message.

    If it still doesn't seem to run:

    Please click Start, Run, and enter cmd and click OK. This will open a command prompt window. Enter the below commands at the command prompt each followed by the enter key. The bold black are commands. The red is merely informational.

    cd \MGtools <-- this changes to the MGtools folder and the prompt should change to C:\MGtools>
    GetRunKey <-- this will try to run all one scan from MGtools. Tell me what error messages, if any, you see.
    ShowNew <-- this will try to run all another scan from MGtools. Tell me what error messages, if any, you see.

    Yes I did save itto the root directory. I do not have a MGLogs.zip in the C:\ drive. I tried running the batch files from the command prompt and had no luck. GetRunKey said it was running a scan and then butgave a note saying not to worry about something and then the window closes. ShowNew said it was running a scan and also closed instantly.

    MGtools downlosaded fine, it extracted all of the files to the folder just fine, the problem come when it tries to run the batch files. I can see from the log that it tried to run GetRunKey but it doesn't seem to have done anything after that.

    I'm not sure if this is related but I keep getting messages from something called just in time debugging.

    Since i know its a standard thing to run I tried to run hijack this out of the mgtools folder, it started the scan got through 6 things and gave me a popup that said it had been denied write access to the hosts file. Again not sure if this is related. I pushed okay on that and it went back to scanning, then it just dissappeared. I tried to reopen it and it said Windows can not access the specified device, path or file. You may not have permissions to acess the item. I have been getting this message from other programs too.

    Were you able to find anything in the other two logs I posted?

    Thank you very much!

    If you can get into the control panel at this time, create a new user account with Admin. privileges. Then try to run all the scans on that account. See if you can get logs for:
    SAS
    MBAM
    RootRepeal
    ComboFix
    C:\MGlogs.zip

    Good and bad news, bad first: I made the new account and since MGTools was the only thing that was already there I tried to run that first, something happened, I got an error message (possibly unrelated to MGTools?) that said something about Adobe PDF and when I clicked ok everything except the Recycle Bin, My Computer, and My Documents was deleted off of my desktop, everything except Zip.exe and another exe that I don't rememer was deleted out of the MGTools folder and my start menu was cleared except for a startup folder which is empty. All of the files for the programs in Program Files still seem to be there though.

    So I started over and ran all of the scans, SAS didn't work, it started to install, had an error and stopped installing. I tried repairing the installation and it said it could not modify the file. I uninstalled it and tried to reinstall using a fresh, and renamed download of the installation file and it told me it could not modify the exe. MBAM also didn't work I installed and ran it, it started a scan and died, when I tried to open it again it gave me the "windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access this item" error again. Next I ran combofix which started, restarted my computer, then ran fine, that log is attatched (it's just called log.txt, sorry for the nonspecific name, the rest are better). Then I ran rootrepeal which also ran fine. Then I tried MGTools again and it worked (including apparently the HJT part of it which before would not work on its own) also. In hopes that I'd managed to fix something I reinstalled MBAM ran the quick scan and it actually worked. I removed the infections it found and a logfile is attatched. I'm going to try to uninstall and reinstall SAS again and if that works I will upload that logfile as well.

    Whatever that first error I had was, with the PDF thing, has not reoccured and when I installed the scan/clean programs they were added to the start menu just fine.

    Thank you very much, it seems like this computer is on its way to working again.

    Very good.

    * Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
    If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    * Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    * If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    * Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below code box into it (make sure you scroll all the way down in the code box to get all lines selected ):
    Code:
    KILLALL::

    File::
    c:\windows\Gyapedabexob.dat
    c:\windows\Ahugolasihikilug.bin
    c:\windows\win32k.sys

    Folder::
    C:\Documents and Settings\kesselmh\Application Data\AntiVirus Plus

    Registry::
    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
    "services"=-
    "smss"=-

    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\MSConfig\startupfolder\C:^Documents and Settings^kesselmh^Start Menu^Programs^Startup^AntiVirus Plus.lnk]

    * Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    * At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    * You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    If it asks you to overide the prvevious file with the same name, click YES.
    * Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif
    * Follow the prompts.
    * When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    * I will ask for this log below

    Note:

    Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

    Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:

    * C:\ComboFix.txt
    * C:\MGlogs.zip

    Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

    Thank you so much, the computer seems to be running great. It is definitely faster and I haven't had any trouble with it. I am able to install programs and browse the internet without any trouble. I ran an AVG virus scan and it came up with nothing at all. I also ran the online SAS scan you posted before and that also came back clean. I have attatched the logs you rexuested but everything seems to be fine. The only problem I still have is that my start menu is empty, I'm not sure if it is possible to restore this or if I'm going to have to do it by hand.

    Thank you very much for your help. Here are the logs and hopefully they are clean.

    Your logs are clean. You should post in the software forum for assistance with your start menu items.

    If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    4. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    5. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    6. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    7. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    8. If you are running Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 6 of the READ ME for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    9. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
