    Hi,

I have followed all steps in detail in the MALWARE REMOVAL GUIDE. Please see enclosed my GetRunKey, ShowNew & HiJack This Logs for analysis.

I do NOT have any log files from Bitdefender or Panda Active Scan, as no problems were detected what so ever.

Please can you check and advise as to what I should do next? I will wait to Toggle System Restore until you advise me what to do next.

    Thanks,
    Brendan

What about the log from CounterSpy? Did it find anything? I expect it did not find anything other than possibly cookies.

Uninstall the Sunbelt CounterSpy trial since we are finished with it now! Then delete the below two folders which may be left behind by the uninstall:
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Sunbelt Software
    C:\Program Files\Sunbelt Software

Why didn't you run CCleaner? You should have!

What malware problems were you having the prompted you to run the READ ME? Your logs do not show any problems!

Yes, CounterSpy did find a trojan, which I have quarantined. Please see attached log. What prompted me to do the scan in the first place was my PC was almost grinding to a holt. I had to keep ending a process, that was using between 88% and 99% of my CPU at any one time. I cannot recall the name of this process.

I did run CCleaner as part of the Malware Removal Exercise. Why did you think I didn't?

    Re: CounterSpy Log

Here is my CounterSpy Log Chaslang. Worth mentioning that I appeared to have an associated peice of Spyware that SpyBOT picked up called MBSsexxxpassport, which I removed.

Because your newfiles.txt log shows a load of files in your temp folder from as far back as Feb 5th. Ccleaner should have removed these temp files. That is the reason for running it. See the below folder mentioned in newfiles.txt.

    C:\Documents and Settings\Brendan Ramsey.D3SB551J\Local Settings\Temp\

Did you uninstall the CounterSpy trial now? If not, you should since it will add to your slow down problems.

You can also run HijackThis and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    R3 - URLSearchHook: Yahoo! Toolbar - {EF99BD32-C1FB-11D2-892F-0090271D4F88} - (no file)
    O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {8B68564D-53FD-4293-B80C-993A9F3988EE} - (no file)
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [UserFaultCheck] %systemroot%\system32\dumprep 0 -u
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] "C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0_01\bin\jusched.exe"

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

    How are things working now?

Ok fine, I will run Hijack this after posting this reply and closing the browser.

    A few questions:

    1. With respect to CCleaner, I can't understand why it didn't wipe the contents of the temp file, as I always run it with default options selected, which includes removal of temporary files under the 'System' section. Is there any reason why it may not have done this?

    2. Did you see my CounterSpy log? CounterSpy did find a trojan, which I have quarantined. What prompted me to do the scan in the first place was my PC was almost grinding to a holt. I had to keep ending a process, that was using between 88% and 99% of my CPU at any one time. I cannot recall the name of this process. Should I still proceed and remove CounterSpy, hence deleting the quarantined file before hand?

    3. Can I hide all files normamlly hidden now I have finished the malware removal exercise?

Potential bug in Ccleaner. Try it again and if you still see old files in that folder (look for yourself afterwards) then run the below which should work properly.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune. This program does not require an installation. The executable actually runs the program.

NOTE: This program is for Windows XP and Windows 2000 only. ATF Cleaner will remove all files from the items that are checked so if you have some cookies you'd like to save. Please move them to a different directory first.
    • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
    • Under Main choose: Select All
    • Click the Empty Selected button.
    If you use Firefox browser
    • Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
    • Click the Empty Selected button.
      • NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
    If you use Opera browser
    • Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
    • Click the Empty Selected button.
      • NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main ATF Cleaner menu to close the program.

Yes I saw the log and CounterSpy did its job and we are finished with it. After uninstalling it delete the below folders which may be left behind. This will remove the Quarantine too.
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Sunbelt
    C:\Program Files\Sunbelt Software

You don't need to hide anything unless it bothers you seeing all the system files. Just remember that when you go back to the way you had things before, you are all giving malware the ability to hide from you too.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. If we used Pocket Killbox during your cleanup, do the below
      • Run Pocket Killbox and select File, Cleanup, Delete All Backups
    2. If we used ComboFix you can delete the ComboFix.exe file and associated C:\combofix.txt log that was created.
    3. If we user SDFix you can delete all the SDFix related files and folders from your Desktop or whereever you installed it.
    4. If we used VundoFix, you can delete the VundoFix.exe file and the C:\VundoFix Backups folder and C:\vundofix.txt log that was created.
    5. If we had your run FixWareOut, you can delete the Fixwareout.exe file and the C:\fixwareout folder.
    6. If we had you run Avenger, you can delete all files related to Avenger now.
    7. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    8. You can delete the ShowNew.Zip and GetRunkey.Zip files and the files that you extracted from the ZIP files. You can also delete the C:\newfiles.txt and C:\runkeys.txt logs that were created
    9. If you are running Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • go back to step 8 of the READ & RUN ME to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

    Thanks Chaslang.

I ran CCleaner again, but it didn't empty the temp folder, as we suspected. I ran ATF Cleaner and it did clear the temp folder, so problem solved this time. Should I run ATF Cleaner in the future instead of CCleaner?

CCleaner has more features and can selectively save certain cookies too, so it is a more useful program, but on the downside, if it is not cleaning your temp folder (and I don't know why this happens on some PCs) then you will need to another program to do this and ATF Cleaner is a good alternative.
