Has anyone attempted to try this? I downloaded the pendrive linux installer with the Mandriva iso file. All seemed to go well on the install but when I boot up to USB the Mandriva screen comes up and that is it. It has a image on the bottom of the screen that appears to be a "loading" image but it never loads.
Any suggestions would be great. Ultimately I would love to run a full machine running Mandriva but for the mean time, utilizing the UBS boot option is what I am stuck with.
Thanks in advance for your advice. :)

The black screen could mean that it sticks at video. I usually choose vesa because I have crap video and I'm sure I will see a display. Xorg will sometimes load a video driver that doesn't work so going for the absolute lowest video will prevent that from happening.
If it is a laptop, I also try acpi off. Some distros have this as noacpi.
Do you get an option for other choices, like press F3? If so, select that and see what you can turn off. I've also discovered noscsi can eliminate some hangups.

plodr, thanks for the response. No, when I go into the BIOS and select it to boot from the USB Device, it boots to the Mandriva screen and that is it. I did discover, when I hit "Esc" that it brings up what it is doing. It said this file could not be found, that file could not be found and WARNING: Can not load OS or something along those lines. SO I am in the process of DL the KDE4 vice the GNOME. Honestly, I don't know what the difference is.
    Keeping fingers crossed. :)
If anyone reading this is like "This guy is a dummy" and wants to direct me in the right direction, I will be most appreciative. :-D

What brand and capacity is your USB stick? Some have software on them that interferes booting from the USB stick. (People posting at the eeepc users forum have this problem from time to time).
I've only booted one distro from a USB stick and it is a specialty one designed for the eeepc hardware. I have no experience booting Mandriva from a USB stick.

    Have you looked at this?

I used the pendrive site to get leeenux installed. (I created the bootable USB stick from within the XP OS).

Some subtle differences in appearance and after you work on one or the other, you hate the other. There are gnome apps that run excellent on KDE (like Firefox) and there are excellent KDE apps that run inside a Gnome desktop (like K3B or Amarok).

I would trust no one here makes you feel "like a dummy." I am overqualified at "dumb posts" sometimes myself.

plodr, I know what you mean by there is sometimes software on the USB stick. I actually formatted 2 USB sticks and attempted the install with the same results. I did use the software from the Pendrive Linux site as well as the Mandriva Seed which was supposed to do the same thing. When I burned the image on CD I was able to use it but it took FOREVER (about 30 minutes) to fully boot up.
Would anyone recommend DBANing the USB stick then formatting it to see if that works?:confused
Thanks for the confidence booster BOoMM. No one here makes me feel dumb at all, I just tend to get fustrated with myself sometimes when I can't figure things out. :)

Of the live CD took 30 minutes then maybe the USB stick takes long too. I just don't know. It seems like you have installed Mandriva on the stick properly.

What are the specs of the laptop you are using?

As far as SBANing the stick, that shouldn't be needed a simple format will work. There is an HP format tool for USB sticks that works. I needed to use it on a 4GB stick I wrecked through my stupidity.

I've uploaded it and if you want to use it to format a stick, you can download it and run it.
    Code:
http://file.walagata.com/w/perk/Assorted/SP27608.exe[/quote] You will get a download popup. After you download it, scan it with your antivirus before you run it to be sure it is clean.

When installed on the stick the OS never loads. When you select ESC you can see what is happening in the background. It mentions multiple files not found and a WARNING stating it can not start the OS.

It's a Dell Latitude E6510 running WIN 7 PRO 64bit. I have 2 VMs running XP pro. One with IE6 the other with IE7 (this laptop I use for work as an application support analyst) Our companies software is only tested on XP and WIN 2000 Server so I use the VMs to troubleshoot issues with the software.

I have not tried doing the above mentioned on the VM so I may try doing that. But don't think you can boot a USB from a VM. Pretty certain you can not.

I may have done the same thing with my two because now neither will boot at all even after putting the Mandriva on them. I thought when formating them, it will re-right the boot sector?

this may or may not help, the link for pendrive linux is ok, but the link for the iso may not be,

the iso is for mcnlive toronto, its based on mandriva 2007.0 - so a few years out of date,

there is a release candidate for a 2010 version but its not final yet,

just thought i would let you know

howklord. Thanks for the response. So what you are saying is, Mandriva 2010 is NOT REALLY Mandriva 2010, it's actually still Mandriva 2007??

my strategy would be to download untetbootin (creates a live usb from any os installation cd very helpful for installing OSs on netbook and other system with slow or no cd drives)

    http://unetbootin.sourceforge.net/

download the livecd that you want to use then go to the link provided and download the program it should be self explainatory from there on

    good luck :wave

oh and another thing before you attempt to do anything make sure the boot sequence is set to boot the usb drive before the hard drive (moving the usb drive to the top is highly reccomended) or if your running like a dell acer or HP then you can press f8 or f12 for one-time boot menu then select usb drive then viola should work, this method should be a no-brainer from here on out, also sometimes the screen resolution might be problematic but luckily you have theoption of changing the screen resolution the the livecd boot menu just look at the bottom and you'll see it)
