Running out of SCARTS...

This isn't computer related..so I think I'm in the right place. (Probably not)

Anyway, I bought a new tv and it has two SCART slots...I require three. Why didn't you get a tv with three SCART slots? You may ask. And that's a good question...but it's happened like this so be quiet. :)

I know there is a product that can take up one SCART slot and provide a few other SCART places - However, I bought one of these for the tv downstairs (as I had the same problem) and when I used the DVD player, all I could hear was "click, click, click, click"...and I couldn't understand what it was. After two trips to the electrician and two fuse replacements, I realized that the SCART device was causing the DVD player to blow a fuse.

I was just wondering what would be the cause of this. Is the SCART device sending too much power to the DVD player or is the DVD player incapable of housing the power that the SCART device is sending to it?

This isn't my issue, however, I don't want to go and buy another SCART device and have my PS2/DVD player or TV blow a fuse or something even worse.

Has anyone had this problem and used a device that they would recommend or is it generally not a good idea to overload the tv with SCARTS.

Thanks for any help, as usual.:)

Do you have any other video inputs on your TV other than SCART? My TV has 3 scarts, a composite S-Video and video only in.

Just two SCARTS. A composite S-Video would have been useful though.

Have you wired it up right:confused: ,the multi scart adapters main cable goes to the back of your tv and the scart leads from each of your devices goes into the multi block,if you have the main cable installed into the back of a dvd or video player you'll be bridging two outputs which is the only conceivable way you could blow something, that or the adapter is faulty

The scart multi only acts as an extension over a single channel at a time,it doesnt produce its own electricity so it cant send any more power than AV the signal

I was thinking that, Adryn. usually understands most technical things....
Ah well it's a bit like usb, plug and play - connect, turn it on and it usually comes up over what you're watching, really good :)

Technically it's wrong to say a scart as it is an adjective, not a noun. But that doesn't stop us :p It's a Europe thing - I seem to remember Germany having them too, and denmark. Like mcadam said it's got the handy feature that you can tell when a connected device is turned on, not just when it's sending video. It can also bring devices out of standby by the same principle. The bidirectional nature also means you can recieve stereo sound from your set-top box into, say, your DVD player's amp.

A scart is a socket that is used in Europe for the connecting of a TV / DVD player and all things audio visual. It has 21 pins and in general gives a superb definition to a plasma / LCD screen. It's only drawback are the sockets themselves which can be of week construction and therefor the lead will keep coming out but as i pointed out in my link above that is no longer the case and a excellent fit is assured

So many people to learn the ways of the SCART, I see...

McAdam, I did have a SCART splitter from Argos as I said and it didn't work amazingly well unfortunately  . I don't know whether it was just a case of a bad device or something else - but it's obviously something that I would like to avoid this time round.

Rikky, I had got it wired up correctly (directly into tv with other SCARTS in the block) but from day one the DVD player basically didn't like it - and since gave up. I understand that I can't have everything running at once, as only one SCART connection is being concentrated on whatever device I choose.

Cheers Nick, I'll certainly have a closer look at that when I get home.

Got a picture of the splitter I used:

It could possibly just be a piece of cheap dirt that was always going to cause problems...but there you go.

    Cheers for the advice.

I see. Its kind of like DVI or HDMI.

I am a HUGE fan of HDMI. My TV has it, but only one hookup :(

    HDMI is essentially Digital SCART.

The thing I don't really understand is why you can't use daisychaining. My DVD player and freeview box have passthough on them - we previously had the VHS daisychained into the DVD player into the FreeView Box into the TV. Worked great, but there was quite a bit of signal degradation due to the number of connectors.

I guess not all devices have passthrough connections.

For a free view box to daisy chain correctly you need a good clean signal something that most of the UK doesn't have partly because customers wont pay for a Aeriel upgrade which is essential If you daisy chain all your units as i have done and get excellent result's
