Running too hot for my comfort...

    Just built a system for my Son;

    EVGA nForce 730a board
    AMD AM2 5800+ x2 Brisbane
    OCZ 800MHz 1024mb (x4)
    MSI GeForce 8600 GT
    NZXT 650 watt PSU
    Ruby Orb CPU fan

    It is not overclocked...

Everything runs great, but the CPU is running at 50 C degrees...
Really could use some advice as this is way too hot for my liking.

What kind of case and how many case fans are you using? Also, how are you measuring temps? Kinda simple, but do you have the case fans blowing the correct way, and is the
    CPU fan spinning?

Ya, with that HSF you should be getting less than 40C @ idle depending on ambient temps as I see you're in Florida. I don't know how experienced you are as a builder, so besides what Fred mentioned, I'm wondering how much thermal compound you used and what kind was included with the HSF. Most folks here use Arctic Silver 5.

The case is a NZXT "Nemesis Elite". (Stock fans, stock directions)

Fans - 1-rear fan 120mm (blowing out), 1-side window fan 120mm (blowing in), 1-front fan 120mm (blowing in), 1-PSU fan 120mm (bottom of PSU blowing up and out through it)

As I mentioned, I have the "Ruby Orb" CPU cooler, the fan is spinning, I'm using some silver oxide paste in a tube that I've used on other builds, and have had no problems.

The Mb has a CPU temp readout in Celsius and it is holding between 42 - 48 degrees.

OH yeah, the house is air conditioned, set at 74F... LOL

    Thanx for the quick replies.

Looks like you did everything properly, the only thing left is the sensors and how the monitoring apps are seeing the temps or there is an eVGA app controlling the fan speed to keep the noise down. Try something CPU intense and see what happens.

Actually, one of the unfortunate traits of a Brisbane core is that they do tend to run hot. From all I've ever read and diagnosed, the best you can do is have a solid CPU fan, case fan, and PSU fan functioning in tandem. I would recommend disabling the intake fan, and using all the outtake fans, to see what you get. To have proper cooling, you need to create a negative pressure in the case.

The idea behind cooling is to move the maximum CFM of air THROUGH the case, not pound it into it and create a static state.

The CFM of the outtake fans MUST exceed the intake fans.

Not much else to be done...

    Thanx for you replies.
I ran nBench version 3 and the temps stayed the same.
(I actually have two PC's running the same setup - My Son's and his Step-Brother)

I'm gonna try the 'negative pressure' method and see what happens.

Another thought... Could the silver oxide paste be old? does it really make a difference?
it was a little "watery" when I put it on, but didn't think much of it...

I am trying to research the Brisbane core as well, to see if there are any settings I may have overlooked...

Oh - My tech level is kinda low, I only do this as a hobby for friends and Family... I've built ten so far...
when it comes to software, I'm a total idiot... LOL

Again, thanx for your responses, Hope y'all had a great Easter weekend.

50C is cooking! Sweet system for your son. First, check the AMD cpu and replace if needed the heat transfer pad or thermal compound. 650W P/S should be enough. However, if you have something in the 850W or larger range try changing the P/S. Also, a larger case with many fans and heatsinks on everything should cool things down.

OK, Thank you for all the suggestions.

It turns out that the paste I originally used was silicon based... I used some actual Silver Oxide paste this time and the temps are running 40 - 45C.

I can live with that, don't like it, but I can live with it...

    Thanx again,
    Doc
