Runtime Error 5

    Hello!

I'm a little bit of a gamer. Of all the games on my computer, only one does not work. It installs fine, but when I attempt to run the game I get the following:

"Runtime Error 5: Invalid Procedure Call or Argument".

This puppy has totally stumped me. Generally, I can fix errors. But this one I haven't been able to. I mean, usually, as troubleshooting goes, different is better. So moving along in the troubleshooting process anything that gives a different result is helpful and typically leads to a solution.

But after having tried nearly everything, the error is still the same and the game doesn't start.

I'm out of ideas and need some fresh ones. I've installed vb libraries and updated Java and installed various .Net packages, but to no avail.

It's getting to be that I'm beginning to think that the game code is the problem, though no one else seems to have the problem I'm having with this game.

I'm running XP with all updates applied, I do believe. My videocard is an nVidia 8800.

I did run combofix and it appears nothing is wrong. I can post the log if requested.

I might add, finally, that I have two machines here at home. The game runs on my slower machine, but I want also to put the game on my newer one.

    Thanks!

Caliban I don't need no steenkin' title!

    Greetings, AlanBernardo.

It would be helpful to us if you could supply the name and version # of the program you are trying to run.

Most gaming issues are graphics related - you might try browsing the nVidia driver updates and forums to see if your specific problem has been addressed.

Well, the game is a text-based golf game, just recently released, called ASG Golf.

I've tried the different drivers, obviously. :)

From what I understand, the "Runtime Error 5: Invalid Procedure Call or Argument" is pretty non-specific, which means it could be caused by a number of reasons.

Couple of things you might try:

    1. Reinstall the game to a different directory or folder, and make sure that none of the files contained within the folder are marked as "read-only".

    2. Reinstall whatever Visual Basic runtime libraries the game might require - I'm having trouble finding the author of the program, so I don't know exactly the system requirements the program might need.

I guess you missed it when I said I tried everything.

What did the maker of the program tell you about your problem alan?

They said nothing, other than no one else has the problem, therefore it's not their problem.

I still think it has something to do with the game's code which is affecting how the game runs on my machine. I can't really fault the position they take, and can understand it. But still, the fact that of all the programs on my computer, this is the only one that not only does not work, but that has ever given me such an error, is compelling enough.

I can typically find out what is going on within a few days. But this error won't go away (and won't change, either).
