Would bookmarks and/or favorites (and I have many...MANY of them) slow down my machine (running XP)? I have LOTS saved in my Firefox and IE8 browsers.

I've been through this "lagging" problem before (pages take extra long to load, and the mouse is a REAL PAIN IN THE @$$!!! It takes the mouse like 5-10 seconds to catch-up with what I do with it (clicking, scrolling, etc.).

I've been running the heck out of CCleaner, Defragging, and generally purging things (I'm cleaning-out/DELETING a lot of Bookmarks and Favorites) that I don't need/use - but I'm having very little success.

    Any suggestions are appreciated...

Caliban I don't need no steenkin' title!

Sounds as if you may have some problems not browser-related...you might take a look at your running programs, CPU usage, etc...since you use CCleaner, have it look at your startup group, see if anything there might be causing the mouse lags...

And, of course, make sure you're malware-free: slow browser functions and mouse lags are always potential malware symptoms...

Wow. Thanks. I believe I'm using the latest FF - 3.5 (though not exactly certain how to check for that) - I labeled it "v3.5 13JUL09" when I last updated.

RAM shouldn't be the problem (I have 1.25 GB - though planning to upgrade to the full 2GB capacity of this machine soon, as RAM is so inexpensive now), so I will attempt creating the new empty profile for Firefox you mentioned, and see if I can figure-out how the Smart Location Bar works.

I very well may have in the neighborhood of 1000 Bookmarks...certainly I do have hundreds of them :-o

    Thank you...

Yes, I suspect it's not the browser.

I suppose it's relevant to mention that the keyboard is often similarly slow to respond as well...

I have been advised previously to avoid messing around in the Ccleaner start-up control as I have Windows Defender and StartupCP functioning on this machine...though I am confused as to which would be best to tinker with for startup control? They show different things between them - and it is confusing for me :confused

I have Defender as real-time protection (I know it's not the best for that), and update and scan with MalwareBytes Anit-Mal regularly (once every week or two - and that always comes back clean).

Wow - thank you again, and yes, I had somehow enabled MBAM as a startup, and as soon as I changed it in StartupCP I could actually HEAR the machine sort of 'sigh' in relief!

Will update to 3.5.5 immediately (with "ALL other programs closed") - thank you all again.
