Greetings and Welcome to MajorGeeks! Hopefully, someone here can help you with your computer issues. I do have a question:

    Normal mode works fine?

One thing you can try, if you have your xp cd.

Boot to the cd. Of course, pressing the "any" key to boot to the cd. :)
Once you get to the first question, please, press r for repair (I.E.) recovery console.
Next, when it asks for which partition or windows version you wish, select the correct number. Default is 1, but, you must press 1 then enter, otherwise the computer will reboot.
Next, enter the administrator password, default is blank. As in, just press enter.

Now, at the c:\windows\> prompt, type in:

    chkdsk /r c:
This can take a VERY long time, pending on hard drive size.

Once this is completed, type in:

    exit (press enter).

Next, cross fingers, that this fixed your issue.

If this doesn't work, then, boot using the cd for xp, then, skip the first 'R', and then do a "R" recovery/repair install/overlay.

You do not have your original xp cd that came with your computer?

From the boot floppies, it looks like, you may have created the floppies incorrectly, OR, you have some bad floppies. :(

Or, at the prompt, what happens, when you type in:

    Map (press enter).

    If you get a c:
    then, type in:

    c: (press enter)
    chkdsk /r c: (press enter)

When I typed in Map (enter) I got:
    Bad command or file name

I do have the original xp cd. It is not being recognized.

    Map should be:

Map [then press enter] I just want to make sure you didn't also type in (enter).

Make sure that bios is setup to start cdrom as first boot order.

As in, make sure cdrom is first on the boot order, within the bios.

Actually, the cd spun around for 5 minutes or so but the crt remained dark & never displayed anything

Do you only have one cdrom drive? I'd still check the bios. Does the cd have scratches. Try cleaning the cd.

As for 'Map', I did it correctly.

As for the remaining last 2 comments.. please walk me thru what I need to do.

The cd is in excellent condition. I tried it in the cd & dvd drives.

How many disks did you create? Per, MS article?

    Did you access your bios?
