I know I have something wrong in my computer. I am not a genius at this virus or trojan thing, so I am coming here for some help.
I do hope I followed everything right.....if not, have pity on me please. My wife has helped with some of it. Thanks, Wayne
I have a high jack logfile.
My problem is that I can't get into boot mode, no matter what I do. So what ever is messing my computer up is keeping Norton from updating and trying to connect to a host file somewhere according to my Windows Defender. Can you help?

I followed each step with the scans and downloaded all the necessary items in your list that I will need once I can get into my Safe Mode. What ever it is, it is not letting me get there via tapping the F8 key. :(

The READ & RUN ME gives you the below link which gives you another method of using msconfig to boot into safe mode. Try using it:

Starting your computer in Safe mode

If that does not work, just run ALL steps in normal boot mode.

Well, I did all the scans and followed the things it said and took out what it said and I am still having some problems. Norton won't update and the computer still won't access the internet sometimes. Runs slow. I am luckey to be on here now! Help! Wayne

Are you refer to this READ & RUN ME FIRST Before Asking for Support sticky thread! If you have run it and are having problems it tells you exactly what to do.

Attach the two logs from the online scanners in step 6 and then and only then make sure you have installed HijackThis properly per step 7 and attach your HijackThis log.

Are you copies of Ewido and Spy Sweeper the free trials or are they paid versions? If they are trial versions, uninstall them. Let me know your answer.

You have no obvious malware that would be preventing you from getting into safe mode or access Norton sites.

They are both the trial versions.
So my problem may be with Norton then?
I'm glad you don't see any viruses. That makes me feel better. Should I get rid of some things for it to run better? Thanks, Wayne

Yes you should uninstall the trial versions of Ewido and Spy Sweeeper which are only 15 day trials anyway. You have Windows Defender so you don't need or want Ewido or Spy Sweeper installed anyway.

You said Norton would not update! Are you sure your subscription has not expired? Do you get any error messages when trying to update? If so, provide the exact complete error message.

What other problems are you having? And how often do they occur?

My renewal date is good until April 2007.
I am getting an Install error:10 from them.
*The LiveUpdat installed failed because LiveUpdate can not register on of it's components. You need to have write access to the registry to install LiveUpdate.
Windows Script Host could not find LiveUpdate...so I have been sending Symantec all the info on what the problem is and so far nothing they have given me works.
I have uninstalled and installed my Norton over and over again and it still won't add the LiveUpdate. I am at a lost to this and hope Symatec can get to the bottom of it! Wayne

At this point all I can recommend are the following

    • Keep working with Symantec because it does not appear that your problems are malware related
    • Check out the following link from Symantec if not already seen:
    • Try posting a message in the Software Forum to see if any one has ideas but tell them you already work thru the Malware Forum and are clean.
    • If you can not resolved the problems with Symantec or in the Software Forum, uninstall it and use something else. We have many free tools to offer that work great and are less resource hungry and have less problems like this that often occur with Symantec.

You're welcome. If they will not refund your money, skip McAfee and use the free tools we recommend in the below. The work just fine and will be less of a headache and are not such big resource hogs as Symantec and McAfee are.
