Safe mode works, sort of

    Hello everyone,

I have an open thread in Malware removal, but it seems it's a hopeless case.
The notebook freezes, crashes, or simply ignores me when I try to start programs.

I would have liked to try recovering the OS in some way, maybe repairing it would have made it possible to go on with the malware removal.

But I don't have a repair point (because I didn't know about them), I don't have a CD (because I moved from Europe to Brazil and some things just disappeared).

If I start in safe mode I can still use Word, but of course, it's not possible to save the file to the USB key, and bring it over to the other PC.

The reason I need the broken PC, is I have plugins both in word and excel that I bought very legally indeed, but of course never backuped.

Is there any hope? Can't I download a recovery of XP SP3 somewhere and burn it and just pop it into the sick notebook?

I promise I'll send a cake and flowers to whomever teaches me to fix this without having to install Ubuntu...
