Isn't there an inherent risk in allowing a remote server to scan every file on your computer?

No worse than allowing your PC to connect to the internet to begin with. It is not just any remote server. It is a well known security site.

Do you download using P2P programs or torrents? That is 1000 times more dangerous.

Do download cracks or keygens? That is 10,000 times more dangerous

Do you ever surf porn sites? That is also 10,000 times more dangerous.

While the 1000 and 10,000 numbers are not proven facts, they are just used to expressed the point of what is more dangerous.
