I was installing a program off my university server when my avast antivirus popped a warning about the .exe I was about to install. I was too naive and assumed it was a false-positive. After installing, I began to get all the symptoms of the Sality virus. Avast has quarantined a bunch of .exe files. I ran the READ ME steps and here are the logs... (I couldn't get the Mbam log because avast quarantined the Mbam .exe file.)

Why do you have Avast installed when you still have McAfee installed? The first instructions in the READ & RUN ME state you must not do this!!! You need to uninstall one of these immediately and then reboot.

After reboot, you need to rerun MGtools.exe and attach a new MGlogs.zip file.

You need to attach the below log from Malwarebytes
    Code:
    "C:\Documents and Settings\plin02\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\"
    Oct 16 2009 1842 "mbam-log-2009-10-16 (16-46-44).txt"
If this PC is being used on a school network and you were downloading a file from there network that was flagged with a Sality infection, you need to inform the IT Department immediately and you need to have them look at your PC. These infections are very dangerous and can spread quickly. Sometimes the only reliable fix may be a reinstall since it can infect all executable files on a PC and spread thru the network.

Why is Windows Update disabled on this PC? Did the school do this?
Why is Task Manager and Registry Editing disabled? Did the school do this?

I never knew I had McAfee on my computer. It never ran when the computer started up so I didn't know it existed.

I'm trying to unistall it right now, but as it's preparing to uninstall it seems that the Sality virus infects it and I tell avast to quarantine the file.

I informed the IT department, but they didn't seem very alarmed.

I'm not sure why Windows update is disabled.
I believe Task Manager is disabled because it's one of the symptoms of the Sality virus - according to what I've read online. I do not know about registry editing.

When I run the removal tool I get the message, "McAfee Enterprise software detected. Cannot continue. Please contact McAfee Technical Support.
Should I try uninstalling avast instead?

I found the log from mbam, I'll attach it in a separate post since I'm using another computer to post at the moment.

Who installed this version? Did your school install it originally? While some aspects of McAfee are still installed, it does not appear to be completely installed and if you uninstall Avast, you may be without proper proper protection. We will remove the remnants of McAfee manually below.

Uninstall Ask Tool Bar if you see it installed.

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    O2 - BHO: AskBar BHO - {201f27d4-3704-41d6-89c1-aa35e39143ed} - C:\Program Files\AskBarDis\bar\bin\askBar.dll
    O2 - BHO: WormRadar.com IESiteBlocker.NavFilter - {3CA2F312-6F6E-4B53-A66E-4E65E497C8C0} - C:\Program Files\AVG\AVG8\avgssie.dll (file missing)
    O3 - Toolbar: Foxit Toolbar - {3041d03e-fd4b-44e0-b742-2d9b88305f98} - C:\Program Files\AskBarDis\bar\bin\askBar.dll
    O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present
    O7 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System, DisableRegedit=1

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Now we need to use ComboFix to remove a bunch of malware files.
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    • If ComboFix tells you it has expired or need to be updated to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box into it:
    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below
    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

Now run Ccleaner. Only use the Run Cleaner button. Do not run anything else on any other forms.

Now download the current version of MGtools and save it to your root folder. Overwrite your previous MGtools.exe file with this one.

Run MGtools.exe ( Note: If using Vista make sure UAC is still disabled. Also don't double click on it, use right click and select Run As Administrator )

    Now attach the below log:
    • C:\ComboFix.txt
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

Yes, the school installed it on the laptop. I might I have tried to manually remove it when I installed avast.

The program from AVG you sent me earlier is running right now. It's pretty amazing, seems to be cleaning up all the infected .exe files.

I'll follow your steps once the cleaning is finished.

Thanks for all the help tonight chaslang.

The logs you requested are attached.
I had to run Combofix in safe mode for it to work.

Ever since I ran the AVG Sality cleaner, Avast hasn't been popping warnings anymore. I do however still have a bunch of .exe files in the Avast virus chest that I think I will restore them and then rerun the AVG cleaner right away since I need those files for lots of programs.

Some odd things about the system are:
    1) When I open Firefox and it asks me if I want to make Mozilla google my homepage, I click "yes". Then I get the following screen:

    NSIS Error
The installer you are trying to use is corrupted or incomplete.
This could be the result of a damaged disk, a failed download or a virus.
    ...
It may be possible to skip this check using the /NCRC command line switch (NOT RECOMMENDED).

Yet after I hit ok Firefox loads as usual. This only appears everytime I want set a default homepage. I believe it is due to one of the .exe files being quarantined by avast. I'll see if this problem still exists after I restore those files.

    2) Automatic updates is still disabled and I'm unable to change it.

    3) McAfee Agent is still listed in my Add/Remove programs list. When I try and remove it says "McAfee Agent cannot be removed because other products are still using it."

The problems you are having may all just be a result of many files that you need either being deleted or corrupted due to the infection you have. That is why in most cases with PE type infections ( like Sality and Virut ) it is really a better idea to just reinstall. Your PC may be in a very unstable state and you may keep finding many things that do not work properly over the next few weeks. In some cases, you may be able to clear up problems with certain programs by uninstalling, rebooting, and then reinstalling, but this will not always work since you could have other problems within Windows itself. So try the below:

Click Start, Run, and enter sfc /scannow and click OK. There is a space after the sfc. This runs System Rile Checker which looks for missing or corrupted system files and attempts to replace/repair them from files on your hard disk or from the CD if necessary. So it will ask for the Windows CD if it needs it.

Now uninstall FireFox, reboot, and then reinstall.

Now we need to use ComboFix again

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:
    • C:\ComboFix.txt
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!
