i have a friends dell 2400 desktop with a fresh install of xp

updated with sp2 and 3 plus windows updates plus netframework 2

according to samsung, xp will install this device, xp has managed to install usb printing support but software like office 2010 can not see the printer.

at the samsung website the only available download is a manual.

searching for drivers brings up results that want $£$£$.. uh uh no way!

if you can shed any light i would be most grateful

    Hello,
On this link for a Samsung laser printer, they have the Samsung universal printer driver that is supposed to work with all Samsung printers. Click the driver tab. You want to download the UPD that is 20.66MB, not the PS universal printer driver. There is also a guide for the universal printer driver which might help. Good luck.

    back to the drawing board.

i installed the version suggested and indeed windows xp can see a ML5100A printer.

in office 2010 a typed saved document prints but what come out of the printer is a mixture of the correct type then some lines of random capitals and then more normal correct text and more random capital stuff.

i wrote a few lines in word pad and nothing printed.
i got an error saying the printer is not connected to the port, it clearly is however.

any help most welcome, office 2010 offered me three choices of printer, the UPD or the ml5100 or xps.

i tried both udp and the 5100, neither gave proper results

I have read that this printer does better with PCL5 instead of PCL6. I am not sure if this will work but HP has a UPD that uses PCL5. It might work for your printer even though it is for HP because it is a UPD. Uninstall the Samsung UPD first. If this does not work I am out of ideas. Hopefully somebody here can offer another suggestion.
