:coolI like to think I'm an average computer user, so after installing some recent windows updates, I then did a restart to the computer. The computer no longer will boot into windows. It ' boots to windows xp logo and then changes to a blue screen and after 1second it restarts
    blue screen says
    stop: c0000218 registry file failure
the registry cannot load the hive *file*
    system root /system32/ config/ software
...corrupt or missing or not writtable
or it is log or alternate

    beginning file dump...

Makes you think the update was corrupted. Can you get into SafeMode and do a restore back from there? Or try Last Known Good Configuration?

This past round of updates featured 4 updates to the kernel. I subscribe to a paid newsletter and one of the gals, Susan Bradley breaks down the updates and which to avoid.
One of those kernel updates caused BSOD but I don't remember what version of windows. I did not install those 4 yet. I'm waiting to read her "all clear" before I do those.

I found a thread on the patch creating problems on some computers

on this model, we're running windows xp
I cleaned the computer of viruses a good week or two before this day.

no matter what mode I tried, I got the BSOD

even trying the recovery utilities failed
I was so sure that I would be able to do a restore to an earlier system
restore point would be the majic answer but I never saw the option.

because the harddrive had been split in half, I just reinstalled the O/S onto the other half. I cannot however access that admin. account on the other half.

I don't remember which update it was but I'm going to try to find out.

You might need better help than I can give you on this, but to keep things rolling, some extra info might help.
You seem to have an installation CD. Is that right?
    Is it an OEM disk?
What XP Service Pack do you have?
When you say you reinstalled the OS, was that before the problem started (how long before), or after?
When you say the hard drive was split in half, do you mean it has two partitions on it?
Does it give the single beep on booting?

In case it's a hardware problem, you could try disconnecting everything from the PC - monitor, mouse, printer, any USB devices, all but one memory stick (and try different ones), etc. and see if it will boot. If it will, replace things one at a time and try a boot each time. That will tell you which bit of hardware is broken, if any is.
