I need help in removing the sasser virus from a laptop. I can get passed the windows xp splash screen, it just reboots from there after displaying an error message

"When trying to update a password the return status indicates that the value provided as the current password is not correct."

I cant access Safe mode or the antivirus i have installed which is AVG8. I have XP PRO installed. I have tried a XP boot disk to repair the OS but it just reboots when i enter R.

Is there a boot disk i can use to access my laptop or anything similar to remove it? I dont want to format the HD as it has family pictures and videos on it.

    Can someone please help??

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

Very unlikely that it is a sasser problem. More likely you have Windows damage and will need to reinstall. See the below:

If you want to back things up before a reinstall you will have to investigate the below:

    • Take the hard disk out and scan it in another well protected PC
    • Use another PC to make a special CD which you can boot from to try and run virus and spyware scans or to at least backup data. CDs like the below:

Thanks for replying Chaslang, i have never posted before but a keen follower of this forum.

If i reinstall windows xp, will i lose all the personal files that are stored on the HD? This is something i want to avoid. I have my childrens pictures stored on there which i wouldnt want to lose. :(

    Is there any other way?

    Thanks in advance

Yes depending on how you do it, but this is a topic you will have to discuss in the Software Forum if you need help with this. There are ways to make a 2nd install of Windows leaving other files in place. You still should consider backing up using your drive as a slave in another computer. Also something to discuss in the Software Forum if you need help with this.
