I`m having problems installing a sata hdd (seagate 80gb st380817as) onto an asus K8VSE deluxe.I`ve made boot disks for controllers etc and keep coming up with no drive attached/bios not installed plus windows xp+sp2 not fully installing as it cannot find the drive, but on system startup the computer detects when it scans devices that it is there as serial-CH0 master and nothing detected for serial CH1. Should i have bought another drive the same.I was of the belief that i could just use one drive on sata. Motherboard book not helpful and am at wits end with no hair left to figure it out!

Yes you can run only one SATA.
Do you have SATA drivers on a floppy disk?
And are you pressing F6 for third party drivers during windows setup?

Another note, Boot order, CD first then sata, then floppy

Details? what happens next, are you prompted for the drivers on floppy, if so are they accepted?
Are you getting any error's? post exact error?
You recieved message that bios not installed, any more details on that?

Seagate should have utility to diagnos for hdd problems, also to format hdd.
I think it's called Seatool might be avaible on the front page.

on system startup, i come across a screen that detects drive as serial ch 0 master under via tech vt8237 sata raid bios ver2.01 goes to next screen and says no devices attached to the fastrack controller-the bios is not installed whilst detecting ide drives. i`ve used disc wizard starter edition and the drive is detected and formatted /partitioned and given a drive letter i think.then this program tells me to load windows after its finnished but it does not mention about disk with sata drivers. I begin to load windows and press F6 and then install floppy and then it reads and then adds more files and then begins to setup windows but stops and says xp didnt find any hard disk drives installed.
The driver i obtained using different pc with the motherboard cd and loaded xp drivers containg fastrack378 ver1.00.0.37.
I must note that i earlier installed a 5gb ide drive and was able to load windows no probs but not really my preference and tried F6 and ignored F6 on occasions.
think i`ll go outside and kick the dog! hehe.

Here's my 5 penneth worth monarch, when you install drivers from F6 be sure to choose the correct one for your HD as I had this prob a while ago and was installing recommended driver but was getting the message no HD found until I tried another and all was well..ps. there are several dirvers on floppy that came with mobo to choose from, hope this helps :)

Not sure if this will help or hinder you, but do you have 2 separate SATA controllers on that board? I had a conversation last year with a store owner who told me that the AMD boards with the 2 SATA controllers had to have the 2 controllers installed in a specific order in order to get it to work. (it took 6 techs half a day to figure this out). Also, I had a similar problem the other day with my wife's comp when I reformatted. After I got Win XP loaded. I got the NTLDR missing message. Even though the SATA drive was primary master 0 when I loaded Windows, when I added the other 2 harddrives (EIDE) they became primary master 0,1, optical drives secondary 0,1, and the SATA became third device (2) and I had to change the boot sequence to get it to boot from the SATA. Also, I had to set the onboard EIDE controller in a certain order to get the BIOS to see all 5 drives. Her board is an MSI with Intel chipset, but there may be some similarities. I had problems with the Asus board that is now in my sys when I first built hers using it. Hope there is something of use to you in this ramble, or someone else will pick up on somethng from it. Good luck.

    Maybe THIS will help.

If you get stuck anywhere, Seagate have an excellent FAQ listed HERE.

    Good luck.

    thanks ppls for your help.
    Problem is now solved.
I think Toke hit the nail on the head.
The motherboard cd had three different drivers for sata/raid so instead of using one type which i thought was correct,i ended up floppying all three and thought what the heck and installed them all one after the other and guess what? Windows install progressed further and then asked for (via sata-raid driver)so i obliged and the rest is history.Wish the manual was easier to understand.
    once again,
    thankyou all for your attention.
