the computer i'm building at a store (i choose the parts, they build it), put me a sata DVD-R drive. it's the LG GH20NS10 for those who wanna know.

what do you guys think about sata DVD-Rs? and do you need drivers to use them?

I like them myself. You get a CD and a DVD burner and player. Should work with drivers in the OS. You might need some additional drivers if you have a lightscribe one, and some come with some software.

SATA is nice too, especially since most mobo's only have one IDE header:confused.

Looks like a good one: http://www.geeks.com/details.asp?invtid=BLK-GH20NS10-BULK&cat=DVD

Should come with a disk, ask them for it.

but will it read the Windows install disk during boot up so I can install windows?

Should be no problems. If I am not mistaken, during the windows installation, generic drivers are used for the mouse, keyboard, cd/dvd, and video card.

yes, but before the windows installation loads, my computer must detect and be able to read the Windows cd

You are right. Windows does not include SATA drivers you need an IDE CD ROM or DVD/CD.
You need to install the SATA drivers from a floppy or CD during windows install.

so then I should just get an IDE DVD-R

Personally I would. If only for the prevention of possible installation\repair nightmares.
I'm not expert on the performance diffs.
Maybe the drive has both connections ie install windows then change to SATA.
or 2 drives. Your high end DVD SATA and a real cheap CD ROM just so you have a
system you can work with when things go wrong.

Just to test my theory, I unplugged my main hard drive and booted with my windows CD from my SATA DVD drive. Worked. You do need to install SATA RAID drivers if you are setting up any kind of hard drive RAID. Windows has generic drivers for the SATA devices.

Of course it is never a bad idea to have an IDE backup CD just in case you run into something strange, but I don't think you have to have it.
