I rarely have HD issues or any other hardware issues for that matter.I my HDs normally last me 10 years or longer i had one last 16 years.

But last few days my one 80 gig Sata Hard Drive is making a slight humming noise.I know its the Hard drive i took it out of the case to make sure that its not the fans and had it run out side the case it self.

Any ideas way it makes a slight humming noise could it be failing soon.I ran chkdsk 7 times and formatted it 3 times.Seems to run fine.

I used my 80 gigs for OS but will use it now for back up if it is failing..

For some reason it would not allow windows to operate on it at all kept making system crash.

So i had to put my OS on my 160Gig i have.

I do not remember when i bought the 80gigs.It might have came out of another computer. But i think its about time i get a different one any way.

But what could be causing the humming sound. Its not a clicking sound i know what part that is.It is just a humming sound. Its not from spin up time the hard drives are very quite.Only way i could hear it is if i put my ear up too it.It was vibrating against the case it self this is how i know it was the HD and not the fans.

Just to be safe I'd backup anything you don't want to lose on that drive. You can download a hard drive heath check utility for your drive. Just Google the brand of drive you have plus health check or search for a windows based SMART utility. This should give you an idea of your drives health status. Personally I typically dump drives once they get to around 5 years old just to be safe.

I am now using it as a backup drive now so no worries.Just kinda odd that it makes a humming sound every so often like i have to take a end of a big screw driver the plastic part and tap it a couple of times to make it stop making the sound.

It is not from spin up time or spin down.It is a very quite HD all of mine are.But when they start to make odd noises like that it is kinda annoying.

I know it was not the fans vibrating against the case they are fast but they are tight enough that they do not vibrate the case.
