The old 40GB hard drive died on my Fujitsu Siemens XP Pro desktop PC. I ordered a new Hitachi 320GB drive, unaware that the communications standard had changed from parallel to serial i.e SATA. The power supply plugs have also changed and I understand there is now an additional voltage required. Will I be able to use the new drive on the old machine or would I be better to start from scratch and build a whole new computer? I see I can get a PCI 1x IDE & 2x SATA RAID Controller. I don't know if that's what I need but in any case, that won't solve the power supply issue.:(

thats more for turning a IDE drive into a sata drive and you normally have 2 IDE channels on older motherboards but that adapter should work. but u wont be able to plug in anything else on that IDE channel

The bits came and I connected it up this evening. I had forgotten, the DVD drives are on a different cable so I can manage like this on a temporary basis. I have another hard drive that was previously used for backing up files and I want that in as a slave at some point so I will need an extra parallel connection.
It seemed to be working OK with the XP recovery disc. It formatted the hard disc and was then loading files but must have crashed part way through. Now when it tries to boot it comes up with "disc read error". If I try to boot with the CD it just crashes. :cry
