SATA on Intel D845GVSR

Hi people,

I have a Intel D845GVSR mobo and I'm planning to buy a Seagate 320 GB hard drive with it. Okay, this may sound naive, but as maximum RAM support, is there a limit to what capacity hard drive my mobo can support? Also, does my version of mobo support SATA drives?

I heard from someone that it does not and I might need to buy some card? Is it true? I already have a 80 GB ATA drive, which I'm planning to keep alongwith the 320 GB (SATA) one. Will these two different types of drive work together?

Your board does not support SATA (at least the specs on the Intel website say it does not) so you will need a controller. Yes, both types of drives can exist in harmony.

ok so i need a controller. what's it called specifically, and a general estimate of how much it costs?

 

I have only used SATA controllers for RAID 5 configurations and if you are only going to set up one drive and have no need for RAID then the board I recommend is going to be overkill. I use the Promise TX2300, for home use it's a nice board but I would not put one on a production machine. They are in the $70 range.

Maybe someone else here can recommend a good SATA card without RAID as that will save some cash.

I'm just thinking to buy a ATA drive, because the card makes a SATA drive too costlier. I hope there is not a much significant difference between ATA and SATA.

 

Transfer rates on SATA tend to be higher than ATA.
