    Hi!
Help me with my dilema
My MOBO Asus P4P800 deluxe has 2 SATA controllers which support RAID 0 under win XP. I have 2 74 WD Raptors SATA drives, 250 Hitachi SATA and old 65 Maxtor IDE. So I'm pondering: Does it make sense to strip both Raptors? RAID 0 or higher? What to do with Hitachi? I guess I can buy PCI controller card to support it or raid card to support all 3 SATA drives. I'd appreciate any ideas. I also use external HD via usb 2.0 to make backup of my primary HD with Ghost.
    Run coool... :D

if you want to stripe both raptors (Raid 0) you'll get the best performance.. but keep in mind that you'll also get extra stress on the drives, and increase their probability of failure.

I would just use the extra 250gb drive and the hitachi as standard storage drives

Thanks. What SATA controller would you recommend? I've seen prices from $15 to a few hundred bucks  ?

Raid 0 makes a huge dif.. I went from 40MBs ( one drive ) to near 90MBs ( with two drives ) then again if one drive dies you loose every thing on the array.....I reccomend setting up a raid 0 with the 2 rapters and backing it up regularly to the 250 Hitachi.....

If your going off sandra or similar bandwidth benchmark it will show faster speed, but in real world load and seek times it doesnt improve performance,I have never had raid so I cannot argue performance first hand, but according to the article and few others I have seen it does not,I see it in the same vein as servers two cpus is great but aint much use for desktop,I wish I had the energy to argue further :D

True it wont effect game loading mutch or other programs that take a long time to load ( thare normaly vary mem bandwidth / size dipendent ) Windows loading is the big thing thow whith my array i got to 0 activity from a cold boot in under 30Sec.....

So do you think the one time you turn your comp on in a day "if your me,when I get up ;) "is worth the expense of two raptors +the added danger one my go and take everything with it,to me the positives outway the benifits, any other apps that come to mind that will offer more performance apart from win load times?

Nice discussion, interesting article BTW. Now I'm totally confused but got information to digest ;) Question remains still - regardless of the RAID type I'd pick can you recommend controller card for my remaining SATA drive?
