I had a previous 120GB ATA drive fail, so when rebuilding and finding my board has the abiltiy to support various SATA Raid configs, opted to load twin Maxtor 300GB SATA drives in a Raid 1 array (Promise) things have been good a few months but now one drive has apparently failed (??) and I'm running off the second drive. I tried using the Promise utilities included with my ASUS mobo to rebuild, and that succeeded for a while, but it failed within the month again. Is there any utillty/repair tool or software out there to help me. Both drives are in warranty, but I'd like to figure out what's going on myself....I think I could thru trial and error see which drive is out.

Just found this site...seems like a good find! If I did my signature file right, you'll know what setup I've got....and clearly I've had more money than sense!

Just in case: Kingwin Custom case, ASUS P4C800-e, 1 GB Corsair DDR500, P4 3.06, Thermalright SP-94 & NB-1 heatsinks, Hardcano 12 monitor, Creative Audigy 2ZS, ATI 9600 AIW vid, about 10 fans, twin 300 GB Maxtor SATA drives (RAID 1 Array), and a buncha other kewl stuff!

    Thanks for any help!!

    start, programs, accessories, command prompt.
    open the black window

    at the prompt, type chkdsk
that utility will tell you of problems.

then, the option to fix, will appear.

    type in chkdsk /f

the fix will not happen until you reboot.

    hope it werks!!

It sounds like your drive may be going bad. Download PowerMax from Maxtor's website. It will run some diagnostics and tell you if your drive is bad. Maxtor will ask you to do this anyway if you want to return it for a new one.

This is not a failing hard drive. This is a problem that I am experiencing on many different platforms with hardware raid 1 and software raid 1.

The hard drives aren't even failing. I took a failed one out of a server about a year ago and have been running my desktop on it since.

The problem has a few things in common. Raid 1 (hardware or software doesn’t matter) and SATA and ASUS motherboards. I had written Adaptec off as a company because I blamed them so I switched to an Intel controller and… same problem. I haven’t found anyone else talking about this… it’s very frustrating.

If anyone else has had any experience with this then please let me know of any ideas. So far none of the vendors will recognise the problem.

Now that is an interesting response...I haven't yet had time to open my 'puter up and try each drive separately...I assume that is what I would need to do if there were a bad drive..to see which is ok. Dont know if I mentioned it earlier, but I was able to reset my array, took a long time, but it worked after that...for a while only though. I'm going to check at ASUS and Maxtor support and see if I can find anything....my next project is to back the whole mess up on DVD disks..then open my machine up!

    Thanks for the continued support!!!
