Sata & Sata2

This is kind of noob question I hope I dont loose to much respect for posting it , but here goes it.Is there a diff between sata & sata2?I just bought an external hd case(nextstar3) it has sata to esata & usb and i want to purchase new hd. Do i have to buy an sata or can i buy an sata2? Or should i just stick to the idiot proof usb and loose all my transfer speed?:confused

 

SATA is the original, slower speed - something like 1.5Gbps, whereas SATA2 is the newer, faster speed - near 3.0Gbps. A SATA2 hard drive will work at both speeds, and a SATA hard drive will only work at the SATA speed.

Newer computers/motherboards may come with an eSATA connection on the back for drives such as yours, but that SATA to eSATA connector apparently takes care of that issue for you - as long as you have an opening to insert the other end of that adapter. eSATA works at SATA2 speeds, so unless you get a SATA2 drive, you won't see as big of a speed boost.

so as far as the actual instalation of the drive no diff (in re: to the external case)??

 

correct, installation will be the same. Unless you find a better deal on an older SATA150 drive, go SATA300 (SATA II).
