    A co-worker just told me about another Google clone called Blackle. They also have a "Watt hours saved" below the search. I'd say this is interesting, and I don't know if anyone else would be interested. So enjoy! :)

    Here's what their About Blackle page says.

    This was mentioned before, someone brought up printing the page. Will it try to include black on the printout if you do print out a search?

    I know I did a search through the forum just to see if there was a post, but searching on "Blackle" and didn't come up with anything so I didn't know at all. As for the printing the page, the only thing I know that will include black on the printout is any images. I did a print preview in Firefox and saw the logo, search bar, search button and the Google Custom Search are with the black background. All the rest is as if you were printing with a white background and black lettering.

    I've done the same thing when I print out an article on Sci-Fi Wire which comes in with a gray background and black lettering. The background color is ignored.

    By the way, I just did it with IE7 and I get the same thing on the main page with the exception of the search bar changing to a white background.

    I don't think it really applies to LCD screens. Probably better off just turning your screen brightness down some.

    I was reading the Google Blog on Sunday and noted they said;

    One idea, suggested by the site called "Blackle" (which is not related to Google, by the way, though the site does use our custom search engine), is to reduce energy used by monitors by providing search with a black background. We applaud the spirit of the idea, but our own analysis as well as that of others shows that making the Google homepage black will not reduce energy consumption. To the contrary, on flat-panel monitors (already estimated to be 75% of the market), displaying black may actually increase energy usage. Detailed results from a new study confirm this.

    Interesting to note that Google even did research on the topic. There is also another blackle type search that offsets CO2 emissions called the Carbon Neutral Search at http://www.carbonneutralsearch.co.uk

    I find their argument that it saves energy quite specious at the best. One could save tons more energy by just using a low-flow showerhead or turning your hot water tank to 140 instead of 180. I agree that little things can add up to a lot but not in this case. They're just getting free publicity out of this.

    You notice on this one how they have the CRT Monitor Search, which turns the screen black and all of the text is a gray, not black? Maybe they're saving energy that way...

    There are around 25 different versions of “black google” online. The best one I’ve found is www.cleanblack.com. Cleanblack is the only version that allows you to change the text colors of the google search results. Try it yourself by going to www.cleanblack.com/theme/

    so you are saying that if they had black letters on a black background you would have max saving ;)
