Save Website Passwords like Fire Fox in IE 8.

NOTE: I have a web application that will only work with Internet Explorer so other browsers are not an option.

Question: Is there a way to get Internet Explorer 8 (IE8) to save passwords the way that Fire Fox saves passwords?

Details: I've set IE8 to save my username and password using AutoComplete and it works, just not exactly the way I'd like it to work. The problem is my username and Password are not automatically in their respective text fields the next time I go to that web page. I have to begin typing in my username and then a drop down box appears with my username in it, I click it and then my password appears in the password text field, I can now click the Login button to log in to the website. (I think this is just the way AutoComplete works but maybe there's a workaround, registry edit, or add-on that will make it behave like Fire Fox?)

In fire fox when I save a password the next time I go to that page my username and password are already filled in to their respective text fields, all I have to do is click the Login button and it logs me in.

Question Again: Is there a way to get IE8 to save passwords the way that Fire Fox saves passwords? Does anyone know of a workaround, registry edit, add-on or program that will make IE8 behave like Fire Fox when it comes to saving passwords?

I really appreciate any help you can offer.

    Thanks.

Here are some suggestions for you:

First, in Internet Explorer go to Tools, Internet Options, Content, AutoComplete, and in the Forms section: check “Save names and passwords “ and "Ask me before saving passwords," and Apply.

If that doesn't solve the problem, log into the site with the login problem. From that site, in IE, choose Tools, Internet Options, Privacy, Advanced, click "Override automatic cooking handling" and select "Always allow session cookies." OK. Close out the window and close IE. Reopen IE and return to the site that you logged into, it should be fixed (it should have remembered your login info). If so, you can, if you wish, go back and deselect the "Override automatic cookie handling."

If that doesn't solve the problem, in IE, try adding the site to your Trusted Sites and/or Local Intranet. Go to Tools, Internet Options, Security, click on Internet or Local Intranet, Sites, Advanced, put in the website's address and select Add. Then 'Apply' the changes, close and restart IE8. (If it doesn't work with Internet, try adding the address to Local Intranet.)

Then, go to the Tools menu, Internet Options, and Security. Select the Internet icon so that it is highlighted. Click the Custom Level button, opening the Security Settings window for the Internet zone. Scroll down the window until you see the User Authentication section (at the bottom). Under Logon, select the option for Automatic logon with current username and password. Click the OK button. You will then be prompted to confirm changing the settings for this zone. Click Yes

Another poster suggested this one -- haven't tried it, but maybe you will: Go to another site, (not one run by a major corporation), that requires an email address to log in ( he used mummydeli.co.uk ). Type in your email address in the Login area then enter any password, even if it's just one letter. It won't log you in, but the process of doing this will make IE8 auto-fill remember your email address and it should then remember it the next time you go to a site where it should remember your password.

    Good luck!

@ Imperfect1, Thanks for your detailed reply. Unfortunately, luck was not on my side.

In “AutoComplete Settings” (See Attached Picture 1) there was no “Save names and passwords”, I assume you meant “User names and passwords on forms”? That was already checked and “Ask me before saving passwords” was also already checked.

As you suggested, I logged into the site but I accessed Internet Options from Control Panel instead of getting to Internet Options from the browser. Would that make a difference? Anyway, aside from accessing the Internet Options differently, I followed the rest of your instructions but it didn’t work.

The reason I did it this way is because I have my IE8 browser setup to show as much real estate as possible without having to go full screen. IE8 allows you to hide the File, Edit, Tools, etc… menus, it allows you to hide the favorite bar and disable tabs but it doesn’t allow you to disable/hide the Favorites button. To do this I had to add a registry key to get rid of the Favorites button (The Yellow/Orange Star Icon) and along with it went the bar it resided on where I could right click on to add/hide the File, Edit, etc… menus, the favorites bar and so on. (See attached picture 2). Right clicking the remaining bar, that has the address bar, back/forward button, refresh etc…, doesn’t bring up the menu that allows me to add the menus I’ve hidden. Therefore i accessed the Internet Options from the Control Panel. I hope that made sense.

When I click on “Internet” the Sites button is grayed out and I cannot click on it to continue. I was able to follow your steps when clicking on “Local Intranet” and added the site. I then added it to Trusted Sites and it said “The site you specified already exists in the Local intranet zone. Would you like to move it to the Trusted sites zone?”. I selected Yes for now, closed and restarted IE8 but my password was not there. I went back and tried it with the site added to the Local intranet zone and it didn’t work either.

I followed the steps above but it still didn’t work.

I’m not sure I fully understood these instructions. Here’s what I did. I went to newegg.com (is that considered a major corporation?), typed in the same email address in the username that I use for the web application, typed the letter “a” for the password, clicked submit, selected Not to remember my password, it gave me an error saying the username/password is invalid. I then went to the web application and the password text field was still blank, I closed IE8 opened it again but the password text field is still blank. Did I follow your instructions on this correctly?

If you see that I did something wrong please let me know so I can try it again the correct way and if you or anyone else has any other ideas I'd love to hear them.

Again thanks so much for the time you took to help me, I really do appreciate it.
