The compatability pack has nothing to do with the OS used*, its function is to add compatability to the older Office versions so they can open up the new Office 2007 format of .docx, .pptx, .xlsx, but you can still save documents in Office 2007 in the older format of .doc, .ppt, .xls so even if the compatability pack is not installed on PCs with older Office versions ( 95-2003 ) they will open fine.

Options to save in Office 2007
    http://img265.imageshack.us/img265/5182/53208866ur5.jpg

The issue you have in not being able to share documents in your office, is likely due to Office 2007 by default saving docs in the .docx etc format over .doc, but installing the compatability pack on all PCs running older Office versions or saving in the older versions, which can also be done by default, cures this.

BUT rereading your post again, I may think both me and Mada may have the wrong end of the stick when you mentioned it screwed over your office, in meaning not Microsoft Office, but the office network? If the Vista machine are not seen on the network then its likely in that the file and print settings need adjusting http://technet.microsoft.com/en-gb/library/bb727037.aspx

We have no issues in work with Vista PCs not being able to share files via both network drives and remote access to individual PCs ( over 3000 PCs of various W2K > Vista ) but we are using Windows Server 2003 ( Exchange Server for Outlook ) to run the server banks.

*will only install on PCs with Windows 2000 Service Pack 4; Windows Server 2003; Windows Vista; Windows XP Service Pack 1; Windows XP Service Pack 2 as the OS though, 9x is not supported.

Back to the other stuff though.............................

hahahhahahaha the inquirer! funny this backpeddling by Microsoft in light of this petition to save XP, that part about system builders being able to sell XP is not a new reply being forced by this petition as it was known and announced last year http://blogs.technet.com/backroom/a...-xp-professional-service-pack-2c-release.aspx ( the blog of the MS System Builder tech team ) these timeline dates.

sadly the Inquirer needs to check its FUD before posting ;)

Kes, to be honest we all get hooked on using what we are comfortable with and this is not wrong, I do the same, BUT using new software is not as scary as you would think, you just need to give it a fair go and not try and compare it to older software, I bet their was a time you would not have thought you would be learning HTML?

an interview with Dwight Diercks from nvidia
Highlighted the crucial bit in bold..... same old same old argument. Taken from here http://www.pcper.com/article.php?aid=357

I may save all these "bash Vista" threads and comments for when Windows 7 is released, to haunt everyone with ;)

I still maintain, use whatever software your happy with BUT dont rubbish the new because its new, try it with objective eyes as many in this thread ( Muskie stands out here ) have done and now like using it, but your not forced to use Vista, it maybe hard to avoid it with new hardware and software being Vista only. Many still love and use Win98 daily, they were not forced to go to XP.

I'm now hitting 13 months with this desktops install of Vista with NO re-install or major issue, now thats stability!

I think Halo is the only one who agrees with me about Vista being a good O/S.

I've already said about how everyone hated XP when it was first released. It's just the same thing happening with Vista.

Everyone will grow to love Vista, just like they did with XP.

Halo, what base score do you get? 5.6 here.

    Regards Jason :)

    Hi Jason

5.5 my CPU in a E6700 is the cause all other items are at 5.9, may change CPU to a Quad to hit the 5.9 score but TBH I not really fussed as anything over 5.0 is great for an all around PC, gaming, business software etc will all run good. ( I could overclock the CPU and hit 5.9, but I prefer stability and the PC is fast enough as it stands )

Scores will change in time to go over 5.9 as new hardware is released, so you may see your score go up or down, depending on how they re-rate the scoring system.

I never said it wasn't. I just disagree how microsoft is handling its "phasing in"

Sorry ACE 256 I haven't looked at every post lol.

One thing I've seen many people saying is driver compatibility. However, I've had a no problems whatsoever and a simple google search goes a long way.

It just really annoys me when many people say Vista is a rubbish O/S when they haven't even tried it.

    Regards Jason :)

I agree mate. I'm building a new computer this year, going to be putting an Intel 45nm processor in, which one I don't know yet, but we'll see.

I see many people spending a lot of money on video cards, well not here. I'd prefer a decent video card (not a lot of cash) than a very expensive video card. What's the expensive video card going to do, get better than the next person in a benchmark test, for it only to be an average card six months down the line? No thank you!

I think my ATI HD3870 will do me fine :)

    Regards Jason :)

That's good mate, but as Halo said, your score will change in time, due to new hardware being released ect.

My system is fine, I couldn't really ask for more.

    Regards Jason :)

I thought 5.5 was good since I did build this PC over a year ago, today I would likely get different HW and hit 5.9...... but yes you win :p :cry

But for a year old, 5.5 is very good... you win on a relative time scale?

Hmmm… I wish Microsoft would make their next OS basic looking and then create downloadable Mods that could be grafted to the OS.

That way the operating system could fit on virtually any machine and still achieve optimal functionality and the user would have the option/ choice to make it pretty.

My biggest quarrel with vista is it doesn’t seem like they improved on the “limitations” of XP, hence less reason to upgrade.

Also, though it does seem like Microsoft is forcing Vista down peoples throats, it’s essentially still XP so people are still going to find ways to make their Halo 2 work on XP- I found ways on youtube :)

I'm sure some day when it's convenient for me I'll upgrade to the latest windows OS which will probably be Windows 7 because the change will be so radical that I’ll have to upgrade. :(

i just read the petition, and it wants to have microsoft keep windows xp available and supported forever? isn't that a little long?

  15. DavidGP

Could you expand on these limitations?

With your other suggestion as to a basic Windows then add the options you wish, is pretty much in part how they may make W7 be, as the core kernel of W7 is to be MinWin, http://www.istartedsomething.com/20071019/eric-talk-demo-windows-7-minwin/ although as I have said many a time, the same conversations and gripes will be aimed at Windows 7 once its released.

I guess the question I would ask, how hard is it to use older drivers? Even a conversion would be better than the current setup. As is, some hardware works only with Vista, some other hardware only works with XP (or older). Other than bleeding edge game machines this strikes me as pretty stupid. Nowdays I see a lot of games that won't work with older hardware (especially video cards) that look considerably worse than their older counterparts, which (to me) says it was basic laziness on the programmers part.

My impression about Direct X was it's ability to overcome this to some extent. Even with the admittedly large variation in hardware the games (and other stuff) could use a standard set of commands to communicate with all the AV accessories.

Sure, I wasn't going to get into It because I didn't want my first message to be too long. I think you can only have about 200 windows open at any given time and then it won't let you open any more... Also, I don’t think it is possible to open multiple applications at once, which would be really useful…

Here’s an example: Lets pretend you’re an engineer and you keep the programs you use most frequently in a cluster on your desktop like AutoCAD, SketchUp, etc… To open them you have to click on one, and then go back to your desktop then click on another. You don’t have the power to just highlight what you want to run and right-click open them do you?
Anyway the limitations are kind of minute but they’re still limitations. I can’t really think of a lot of stuff at the moment. I'm sure if you put your mind to it you can find things to gripe about.

Yeah I've actually seen that video before, and it seems interesting. What I'd really like to see is Windows start and run functionality with Linux customizability/ verity. I'm sure Microsoft will get it right with W7. :D

OK, a couple of real big huh's here!:confused You're griping about not having more than 200 Windows open, yet you're saying that you can't open multiple applications in Vista? I need a couple of more pots of coffee.http://bestsmileys.com/coffee/1.gif

I didn't know Charlie Brown's friend was a programmer! roflmao
I don't think it is really all Vista's fault. I haven't done any programming since Microsoft Basic was on my TRS-80. I would always find fault with the apps I used and re-write them to work MY way.
Today, it's the same way. No matter how well I like an app, there is something that could have been written in to make easier or more versatile, or was completely omitted. That's why there are so many revised versions of apps. Feedback is the key! If the writers don't know what we think, they can't improve on it.

I did the upgrade from XP Pro to Vista Home Premium last week. It took about 1 hour to complete. It was even nice enough to save all my program files in a windows.old folder so I could just copy them back - which worked for most of my apps without needing a reinstall first.

I went in with full expectation of never-ending problems and I came out very impressed with Vista. It was a flawless transition and to add to my happiness, DX10 games look incredible. I'm very happy with my upgrade to Vista and this is coming from an IT professional that has heard all the horror stories so I was prepared for a mess. I'm wondering what all the fuss is about now. Perhaps more time is needed to find all the flaws?
